It takes a specialist to vandalize a horse.

For one, a horse is a moving target.

Two, you cannot sneak up on a horse, as you can with a building, or even, carefully, a cow.

Three, it's a particularly mean thing to do, and that's what Christa Lockwood and her mother, Brenda, were especially angry and sad about Monday.

Overnight Saturday, someone stole into the Lockwoods' paddocks outside of DeForest and hacked off the mane and tail of one horse, and the tail of another.

The vandalism occurred at a crucial time, the beginning of the summer horse show circuit. For Christa Lockwood, 17, this was to be a key summer of 4-H club and open shows for her prize-winning horse, Hamp, a 5-year-old quarter horse she has raised from a colt. For Brenda Lockwood, this was to be the summer of showing her horse, Ebb, a newly acquired rare Arabian pinto, alongside her daughter on the circuit.

The appearance of a horse, including the condition and presentation - braiding, for example - of the horse's mane and tail counts in judging the animal in certain show classes. A show horse doesn't get a haircut, it gets "treated." A horse judge knows the difference and sets standards for both horse and horse owner.

My heart goes to Miss Lockwood......what a horrilble and spiteful thing for someone to do!! :x Hope they catch the person responsible and give them a haircut they won't soon forget!!

we did almost the same thing to a guy in high school........had "hippy hair", so we decided a mohawk would look better.....got a few of us a 3 day out of school suspension.

some punishment, spent the three days at the river fishing and sipping some beer.

i know christa personally. it was hard on her and nothing to really joke about. she wants to show professionally and to have something like this happen was horrible. Hamp, her horse, had a tail that was longer than he is tall. the tail might not seem important, but it is because its something that you are jugded on. Thankfully she was able to go to state this year and ended up placing in the top ten.

Sounds to me like it could have been done by someone that felt threatened by her as competition. I just hate it when things like this happen. The bright side is they did not hurt the horses worse, and though it takes a VERY LONG TIME, the tails and manes will eventually grow back.

I can just but imagine what that young girl thought when she veiwed
the damage for the first time. Poor thing.

In many ways I feel a vandal is worse than a thief. I know the law doesn't feel that way but if there were harsh enough consequences this would drop way off.

A very "Mouthy" HERNESS HORSE Trainer had a Gray/White Standered Bred horses tail ringed like a Mule, it's main stair stepped - and Blue Med Tic/Tac/Toe marks - rings around it eyes and more

I had an altercation with him a week before so he blammed me!
I was NOT GUILTY! - - I did try to get him come off the Fair Grounds to fight but... was Mouthie

A week later 100± Hells Angles came in - one walked up to him and said
"I hear your looking for me!"
No!
Yes you are. I'm the one that did that to your horse! You been going around telling everyone what you wanted to do to me. (KICK MY A$$)

1961 Cow Palace - - Some hoods were getting in at night and turning animals loose and more

After we worked on them the Cow Clippers made nice work of their DA!
White paint and Marking Numbers did a good job on their Vest, Jeans, and ...

We had a similar problem here in central Texas, with Mexican nationals sneaking in and cutting hair to braid hatbands and such with. They sell these at flea markets and charro rodeos. My daughters 22 year old gelding came up one morning with his tail hair cut off where the bone starts and his mane hacked off... couldnt even shoo a fly. If I catch them on my place, the sheriff will have to bring some body bags to haul them off.

when christa woke up and saw hamp that way, she cried all day. Her dad said he came down and herd her crying and thought that her and her boyfriend had broken up. They think they know who it was, someone who boarded at their farm. they werent nice people and are still slandering their trainer.

Its a shame too many people do NOT realize what damage is done by slander. Once people start talking you can never get that back. Too bad some find it a game to trash people for the fun of it. Guess it makes them feel bigger and better about themselves.
