How many others are trying their hand at branded beef, or selling beef directly off the farm? Seems like a way to generate some more cash flow if you can market yourselves.

I have always direct marketed my own beef and other produce, and carried this over to my management for other people. Having started 3 farm shops over the years. I am presently a livestock manager on a large organic and biodynamic farm in England, producing branded products for the top end of the market.

We offer our customers a full grass fed beef program. We do not use any hormones, but we do use antibiotics only when needed on our farm. Most of our cattle are sold by the semi to an online beef company. We have higher standards for our beef program then the online company that buys our cattle in bulk.

Our program is growing every year. We sell our cows on the hoof and will help find someone to buy the other half when needed. We have a freezer permit and sell our packaged beef out of our store. We sell our ground beef though a local specialty shop in town. We sell bulk ground beef to a local mom and pop dinner, but they only use our beef for a few items at this time. The first of July the dinner is switching over to our ground beef and we will also be able to supply them with some bulk "cuts" of meat for them to use as specials. We have set up and sold our beef at a few local events but sell out to fast.

There's a list of changes happening on the farm this year that will help our beef program.
- Monday picking up our second Arctic Cold transportable freezer to allow us to move larger amounts of beef, more sales at local events, and to look at selling at the market in the city.
- Added a second walk in freezer and a third display case at our store.
- Working on a website but have found an issue with our farms name and the URL that we own that will be blocked by anti porn software.
- Working with a company to make new information pantalets, a video to set up at events and if we go to the city market, and a design for our posters and banners.
- Were in the starting stages of looking at grain fed cattle for our own beef program.
- Changing our store hours to 5 days a week.
- Test run our commercial during the news in the city a few more times and make the needed changes.

ecofarmer sounds like you are taking the marketing steps to get your program noticed. I think video can really bolster your position in the market place because it allows you to tell your story more effectively.

You say you are going to look at grain fed. I appreciate both grain fed and grass fed programs, but am a little surprised that you are going to switch to grain fed when the buzz words seems to be grass fed. Do you think your grain fed product will be more marketable?

Were not ready to make a video on our farm and to promote our beef. With the switch over the dinner is trying to get travel and a second magazine to do stories on them. We should have our website up by the time the stories are written. We see a potential supply and demand issue in September and October.

But we still have the parental control issues with the word "nudist" in or farms name. Our location leads to some major issues with web sales.

With us looking at corn fed were looking at it more to the side as a supplement for the people that want local natural beef but don't like the grass fed flavor. Were currently feeding out 2 steers for a large family and depending on how they turn out they will want 2 more around December.
