I remember as an eight year old kid my Dad leaving an old Ford 9N running for three weeks, when it warmed up to 40 below it felt almost tropical.
Yep- back in the 50's before all the 4 wheel drives Dad had an old Chevy 3/4 Ton pickup that he used to feed bales off of...He stuck 17 or 18 inch wheels on it to give it more clearance- and then chained it up with some big grip chains to get around in the snow....During one cold snap he left it running for a week or two so he could be sure he had something....
The bad thing was that even when the schoolbus didn't run--Dad would usually get us thru to school- bouncing down the road with those chains on at 15-20 mph-- shoveling out the drifts he couldn't break thru with a scoop shovel...It really had to be wicked before he would let us miss school....
