What an August!!!

Sure doesn't seem like August here. The ranch got a little over 3 inches of rain since Thursday and has been real cool as well. For the guys who have some corn, it should get pretty good now. Our pastures look about as good as they can. Sure is nice to see. This week it is suppose to be hot. Maybe August will finally show its face.
 
The crops here in southern Ontario are way behind normal.The is a lot of corn that will need a hot September.

The grass had stopped growing due to a really dry July. Good thing it was also a cool July and August so far or we would have burned up.

We got almost 1" over the weekend so the fields are already looking greener. However, it will take a few weeks until it grows enough to move the cows into fresh grass.

I have been cutting and green feeding some oats that I planted late as a ground cover so we may have enough of that to carry the cows until the grass gets up enough.

Sure would be nice not to have to dip into the hay.

I'll take it!!! We have gotten OVER 29" of rain since memorial day...and as of today only have maybe 500 bales put up out of 5000 we normaly could get...our meadows have been are still low and flooded!

Even though you live only sixty or seventy miles from us as the crow flies, we have only had about ten inches of rain since Memorial day. We were off to a good start and had moisture through the first week of May. Then we went a full month, from May 7th until June 7th, without getting any rain. It was really hurting around here at that time, but the rains have come along about right since then. We had close to three inches just this past week, but it came on four different occasions. In my lifetime, I can't recall ever seeing the hills this green in August.
 
Wow, you guys need to send me some of your Nebraska global warming if that's what it brings! We have had just under 7.75 inch since June 1st where we would typically get around 12 inches. But we went into last winter very dry and started from way behind so subsoil moisture is very low here. Like Burnt our saving grace has been that it has been cool here so our grass is exceptionally green and lush for the time of year. Crops are way behind here - canola still in full bloom last week all the way from here up through the Peace river country.
 
Get ready BRG- we've had fairly cool weather and rain showers for the past week too-been holding up some harvesting and haying- but yesterday the heat moved back with temps about 90-- today the highest I saw was 98.... August weather...
 
We've had rain enough to foul up haying all summer I am behind about a week from last year. It has been cool here and the hay is running a 1/3rd behind last year but I've got the best corn crop I've had in ten years so we'll do just fine..
 
my haying season is ending just like it started. i'm going to finish baling some second cutting alfalfa tonite. should have been done last weekend, but had a little over an inch of rain thurs-sat. this haying season has been a challenge. on the flip side, its almost mid august and its still green :D some more chances of rain towards the weekend. hopefully be combining wheat and oats the end of next week. we'll see....
 
Second cutting is just starting around here on the irrigated fields....2nd cutting doesn't look too bad....

Still several out haying CRP fields- where in some areas they are getting a lot of hay because of the July-early August rains.....I talked with a fella the other day that is putting up CRP hay all over the area... Said some of the CRP fields are yielding up to 3 1500 lb bales per acre..And was saying every CRP field that can be hayed is being done- estimating that just in the 25 miles between Peerless Mt and Opheim Mt there are 20,000 bales in the fields by the road...

Some low quality oats and wheat fields being hayed too as people try to get more hay- as with the demand and the high trucking costs to bring it in from any distance- some folks figure they could easily sell about anything locally for $100+ Ton if they have extra...
 
We just got back from Spearfish and it's green from here to there.
Taps country looks exceptionally good. East of Belle Fourche is the
only place that really looks dry.

We got 2" of rain last week in seperate storms and some good
lightening and thunder. The crested wheat should green up again
and that little green grass that comes now seems better than grain
for putting weight on calves in this area.

We have hay for sale...
 
We picked up another 1/2 inch of rain last night in a BOOMING thunderstorm...No wind, but the lightning and thunder would roll you right out of bed...The night before we had another storm that really boomed and gave us a .1-- and got the attendees at the Demo Derby a little wet...

Looking at the radar- it looks like more heading our way coming from the BearPaws direction-- and they are predicting more storms tonight and tomorrow...

I've steered several folks yours and cowboyups direction-- but all are holding tight hoping they can find it more local, so they don't have to pay so much freight....

Here is our weather forcast for today and tonight.
 
We had forecasts of possible severe storms all evening- which had me a little nervous because I was scheduled to perform the wedding of a 3rd cousin to one of the sweetest young ladies around- in a backyard ceremony....

Worked out great- because the rain/storm held off until we got the ceremony done in the brides folks beautiful backyard with rocked in fountain- and we moved to the grooms quonset for the big steak feed and reception- and then it started coming down about 8PM- just straight down beautiful rain :D :D :D :) :) :)

Stayed there long enough to figure out that I was no longer related to 25% of the county- but thru marriage now closer to 50%- had a great rib steak- drank some good Canadian Whiskey- and came home in the rain to check the gauge and see we've picked up .6 of an inch-still raining-- with a 60% chance for more tomorrow :) :) :)

Life is good......

You got more in August than we've had since April! Fortunately, if the rain is timed right we don't need much to get by. But more is almost always better.
 
We're getting more rain showers off and on all morning...Looks like a big front of moisture spinning off over Manitoba and Saskatchewan shooting little storms down our way....
Canadians might be getting wetter....
