What the #### is this?

We've had about an inch of rain today. During last night, a thunder-boomer came through at about 1:30 a.m. One big bolt of lightning knocked out our electricity, and it didn't get restored until over twelve hours later. An REA truck got stuck, and confugalties of one kind or another prevented it from getting fixed sooner. We are spoiled to need electricity so bad. Couldn't even get on this darned old computter. :?

Last Friday evening, we got a nice four tenths of an inch, and on Sunday we picked up another fifteen hundredths. It is all most welcome, and there are puddles everywhere. It's just too cold out to hear the beautiful music of the bullfrog serenade.

Rancher, Jake, Hanta Yo,Haven't heard from you guys out there how the weather turned out today. I sure hope you didn't get what the forecast called for. Nobody needs that kind of stuff.

2 weeks ago we had 8+" of wet snow and the new babies looked like they wished they were back inside their mommas! Now it has warmed up and the grass is coming faster than the cows can chew it off. Always a good feeling for me as it means the end of feeding till fall.

I know it's hard to put up with the difficulties of snow, especially lots of it, but in the springtime it sure melts in a hurry, fills up ponds, makes a muddy mucky mess of the corrals, and my word, it sure makes the grass grow!!!!

Had about 1/2" rain last night, (our rain guage leaks, could have had more). Drizzling this morning, drizzle turned into snow, flakes got bigger, guess we have close to 6" of very wet snow on the ground. I had to go out and broom off the trees and bushes 'lest they lose some branches. All fruit trees in full bloom, hope it doesn't hurt them too much!!! I'm sure we have unhappy animals, I just hope the little fence crawlin' buggers don't end up in my yard  in the morning wanting to be fed. We'll probably give all the cattle some straw, because I know by Fri the snow will be gone, it's supposed to get into the 60's.

We were in Miles City today and it snowed pretty healthy there. Melted fast, so it didn't build up. We left for home and ran into slushy roads. Temperature was 30 degrees, so that made it interesting as well. The country was all white. The further east we got, the less snow there was and the warmer it was. Don't know if the snow came down and melted or if we didn't get as much.

Snowing like a big dog now. The forcast calls for 12" by tomorrow.

Well rancher, thanks for sharing a little of the moisture. We probably have 3-4 inches or so of snow this AM. It's hard to tell with this late snow, as some of it probably melted first. We had freezing rain, or sleet, most of yesterday, but it never amounted to much. I noticed yesterday they kept adding to faster horses, and your area for the best chance of good moisture. At least the wind went down some here, as it did drift it some overnight.

Rancher;
Now don't be all cranky!

We had 35 hundreds in the gauge last night and it's white out there this morning. More sleet than snow. Got two loads ofd yearlings i yesterday and them trucks left some ruts in the yard! I love it!

Ain't sure how much moisture there was in this, but it's all good and if any of you don't want yours, just send it on down, I'll take it. It's only the 12 of May so it's all good. I just love rain and evn snow at this time of year as it ain't going to stick around too long.

Got a baby colt the other day and she's not enjoying this much. Oh well, life goes on. Waiting to hear from the tree planting lady as we were supposed to plant trees today, but I'll just bet we don't !

2.4 inches in the rain guage this morning. There must be some truth to the statement, "when it rains, it pours". This is the total for the last 36 hours. Now the fog has lifted ang the wind is blowing pretty hard. We have a lot of sorting to do, color, sex of calf, etc., before we are ready to turn out bulls next week. Hope the saddle horses have enjoyed their rest the past couple days.

Jinglebob, you can have it part of it. I wouldn't mind 5 inches, but calling for 7" more today. Will be awhile for I can get to cows to see how they did, then have to worry about grass tetnus. Yes it will grow some grass if it doesn't all melt and run down the creek, calling for a high of 61 tomorrow so safe bet what isn't melting below will run down the creek. 2 feet of heavy snow in May is not good for livestock. I had some neighbors branded the day before this hit, I bet they are wishing they hadn't.

16" and still snowing. I am getting cranky.

When aren't you CRANKY? we listened to complain all winter about how dry you were and now you are getting moisture and your still CRANKY.
You should live to be a very old man as my mother says the biggest complainers live the longest. Or it just seems that way as they are a pain in the butt.

Well excuse me Big Muddy Rancher for caring about my livestock. I am off to see if I can even get to them with a tractor, the snow is too wet and heavy to get anywhere. Most of it will melt and run down the creek, in May it should rain not snow. Maybe you ought to get off your butt and come help dig a few cows out of the creeks that are standed. If I don't get them out when this goes I lose a few calves to drowning. So don't talk if you can't do the walk. My gumbo country doesn't handle this weather like yours does.

Well rancher I do care for my livestock We have spring storms as well I fact last year on the 12 of May cattle were drifting. Get over it and just get at it. we all have our challenges and I am not one to say poor me.

That is too funny, who bitches more about poor me on this site than you Canadians. I had a longer post back to it, but deleted it. I am not going to play your little kid games, you can have this site it has gone down hill as north of the border complainers seemed to take it over. Have a good life. Snow has stopped so off to get my sled out and make some snow men.

rancher, be glad you got the moisture. We entered this spring with a good supply of moisture, but now the constant wind has sucked it out of the ground. Seeding is well under way here, and the canola we're planting is basically going into dry dirt. We would really like to see a rain here, and you'd think with all the potholes around here, it would. Hard frosts at night have slowed grass and hay growth to almost a standstill. Cows can't go to pasture and the hay crop just might be a little less than we anticipated. If you all wouldn't mind sharing.....even a little would be greatly appreciated.

I may have underestimated what snow we had here. After trying to trudge through it and what fell this morning, I figure we probably got 7-8 inches or more of very wet snow. It is dang near liquid. No wind and around 40 deg. now. As opposed to rancher, I am estatic. I might be a bit cranky if I had the amount of snow he did though. Everything seems to have survived it so far, and I got hay to everything already, as I am worried about grass tetany too. We put Mag. in our cake, but this sure isn't caking weather.

What did you get LB?

We're finally getting a little snow mist- started about 6AM- nothing sticking...But we're like Shelly-things were getting dry and nothing has been growing because of all the teens and twenty's night temps- can use the moisture......

Looks like a good day to spend at the cow sale- supposed to have some late calvers and pairs- I'll have to see how pricey they are this week.....

Here's my 'two cents' on grass tetnay.

Unless you are on introduced pasture like crested wheat, I don't think you have too much to worry about. Grass tetnay happens when grass is growing very fast, and usually native grass doesn't do that. Having your cows on a good mineral program helps as well, as the imbalance of calcium, potassium and magnesium isn't as drastic.

Grazing introduced grasses in this kind of situation, especially if the cows are hungry after the snowstorm, is a different matter. It would help if you could get some hay to them. Even if they don't eat it all, even eating some will help.

Good luck!

1.7 inches of pure moisture! I love it!

Snow/sleet is going fast and the water is runnin'!

I just love moisture!

Oh, and the baby colt and the calves are fine. The yearlin's got turned out of the muddy corral and are feelin' frisky.

Man, maybe this is God's country!

Well we had close to 10 inches of the white stuff over night last night. It started snowing here on teh ranch about 9 and was still litely at 6 this morning and then the sun came out about noon and the wind blew lightly this afternoon and now the water is moving and we are hoping it moves in the dams we need it in the most. One is hard pan so maybe. It will be all goone by tomorrow night for sure and we were really glad the sun didn't come out unitl some bare spots showed up or would have had sunburned bags for sure on these ol herfords. Lucked out that way anyway.
If this had come this time last month there would have been problems but now the calving is done ya might say except for a few heifers and theya re locked up so easy to check.
Will make for some nice moisture to bring the grass back now after the hard freeze in April and teh celry should come also now. Fed the cows this morning and they came good and maybe tomorrow again and then they should be ok.
The yearlings were in summer pasture all ready and some were wanting to come home as were at the gate. They will get moved farther south when it drys up some as have to trail acorss some folks and that wouldn't be good.
Ok everyone take care and hope everyone faired good in this. See there was alot of flooding around the billings area according to the son and grandson and the Billings gazette.
Take care and think warm weather now ol.
Maybe get to take teh haying machinery out this year, Can hope anyway,
BevM :D
