What's going on at the ranch

Just got in. Had to throw some hay to the dairy calves we have. Checked the heifers and I'm proud to say that we are almost done calving them out. And I got the hogs loaded up so I can leave early for the butcher in Buffalo.

windy, windy, windy. and still waiting for rain. the "experts" say it is on its way. i'll believe it when i see it. hauled a heifer that lost her calf to the sale in Belle Fourche this morning, back by noon. had a couple wrecks in the calving department with the cows while i was gone. i'm 99% sure if i hadn't been gone, nothing would have happened :? . i guess we'll try it again tomorrow......

Just got in from digging up about 40' of water line and moving it to a better location.

The loader work on the top 2' was far easier than the 6" shovel part of it.

Out come was that I got my line mostly moved and I DID break a sweat today after all!

And I should mention that it was my lucky day and I didn't damage the water line once with loader bucket or shovel! :D

Is there a month in the year you don't get snow WR? At times like these I'm glad I'm a flatlander.

I take it you've never had your 4th of July fireworks snowed out before :? . Yes, it has snowed every month out of the year here. Actually this has been a very mild April.

I think it looks festive outside my door right now :D .

It's a new day so here's my Thursday. Woke up to a pretty day. The rain that we had all day yesterday must be hitting WYrancher by now headed for Justin. Fixed our well this mornin'. Had a cracked tee that required total shutdown. Replaced everything in the well house for good measure. While waiting for the glue to cure we moved some calves out on grass for the year. Walked the fence first and pulled up a wire or two. Meadow looks fine and they look happy as calves on grass! :D Came home and sorted off a fat heifer to finish. Then we turned out the bull with cows already out on grass. He looks as happy as a bull should look with lots of lady friends. Got the water back on. I ain't much of a plumber but I'm all I got! :D :D Spent the evening currying the winter off the horses. If anybody wants to build an itchy pillow I'll send ya 5 pounds of mixed colored horse hair! Heading back to the day job tomorrow. Shift work sucks but I do like the days off.

Going bull saling today...Lee Humbert has his North Country Angus sale at the local stockyards...40 bulls and 15 registered heifers...Need to go see how they do...
And hopefully if the weather guessers are right- I'll be sitting in the house and enjoying the rain showers they are predicting... :)
Well today I was able to get away (and finally felt physically good enough- been sicker than Big Muddy even with allergy problems and walking pnuemonia again :( ) to make it to Lees sale...

I got a chance to visit with Lee, and several others this morning, and made it back to the start of the sale after I got a haircut that Grandma had threatened me to take the sheep shears to...

Nice looking offering of bulls and heifers...In great shape- and sold good (like I knew they would).....

Only a couple of No Sales that someone will eventually need/want- and according to Iva at the ring the bulls averaged $2953...

Top bull was Lot 4- # 16479219- a nice looking 1290 lb son of Humbert Partner 7906-- who I think sold to Garbergs for $4750...

Heifers looked good- in real good shape at over 800lbs a piece.... My son tried to help him out on bidding on a couple of the registered heifers- but because of the mild calving season (didn't lose many calves to cull cows on--almost unbelievable after last year and all the no eared, no tails we had)- and the unknowns of moisture we just don't know how much more grass we'll have....And most of Lees are higher performance than we want -(individual preference- no great earth shattering differences for huge debate  ).....

But my figures are the heifers averaged around $953 with top heifer being an add on lot #904 #1647455 which went for $1600 to CK Allen... Tim Wirtz (Scobey area) bought about 6 of the 15 offered heifers.....

Well I got some put up but they turned out like me - kinda puny sized . . .

Weren't much "ranch" work done around here today. Helped a lady work on a website over the phone this mornin. Then when Mr Lilly got home from work at 1:30 we went to the other job. Put new glass in the sandblaster. That was fun....NOT...... them rubber seals do not cooperate. After about an hour I finally got the seal all smoothed out. Then blasted a few pieces that needed....got a pay day and ran to the bank. Came home..started supper.....went to the garden to move the water sprinkler once again.....then back to finish supper. Big ole pot of Vegetable beef stew. Shore was good.

We've been busy enough calving and now getting some lambs I've been too tired to type. Had a yearling ewe that wouldn't dialate today so did a C-section on her. First one I've done on a sheep, one lamb already dead, one alive so I guess it was worth it. :)

Two days away from the end of the first cycle and are at 69% calved.

Good for you on the live lamb Dr. G.

Wow, over 69% on the first cycle is pretty good, no, pretty excellent, I'd say.

Jodywy had 73%, if our cows are close to that tommorow we'll put the dogs on them and beat him! :P

Have some fence work that needs to get done. Reset the shoes on some horses and then I am sure there are some surprises the day has in store for me. Have a good one.

Move to city. Pimp cows out as organic alternative to lawn care (mow, weed and feed). Count cash.
