Remember the old forum ranchers.net??? Back then, poets like sw and jinglebob graced us with their poems on a regular basis!!! Where ya at, guys!!??? I know this is the busy season and all, but sure could use some poetry to share with my co-workers!!! Come on out of hiding and get to writing.....ALL of us here look forward to reading your posts!! :D :D

Yes ma'am. will do right away. I haven't had the time to pay attention lately but I have started a couple of rhymes, just need to get them written down. Better write something new just in case I make it to Deadwood. BTW, are you stopping in on the way over or the way back?

OK, you asked for it. Wrote this a few years back. Seems to still be about the same!

Raisin' Crops
All of my life I've been raisin' things
like calves and colts and such
alfalfa and even an oat crop or two
tho' I never really had the farmers touch

I've even helped to raise some gardens
the hoppers and bugs ate more than we did
i even raised a little hell, once in awhile
back when i was just a dumb kid

Then i met up with this young lady
got hooked up in double harness, so to speak
we've stayed hooked for 24 years now
we still talk to each other, at least once a week

In them 24 years that we've been together
we've been raisin' us a crop of kids
3 boys of our own and a nephew we helped raise
they all grew up underneath a cowboys lid

we take a lot of pride in them boys
tho' we can't take all the blame or praise
they've all turned out pretty good so far
makes it all worthwhile havin' them boys to raise

In this country, we take a lot of pride
in our crops and stock and the things we do
then a drought like this one, comes along
maybe changes our whole point of view

cuz' it ain't no fun when the rains don't fall
you try like hell to get somethin' to grow
so you can get feed, to make another winter
hopefully next spring still be on the go

And maybe lately I've been a little remiss
worryin' about how I'm gonn'a get this job done
I was sure worried about feed for my livestock
maybe kind'a forgot about raisin' one son
one of the boys got into a little scrape
not too serious, but lucky to survive
when one of these deals happens along
you just thank the good Lord the boy's still alive

ya know, I ain't never had any real good colts
who didn't get into some scrape or two
as they healed, they got smarter and stronger
kind'a gave them a whole new point of view

and thats caused me to start doin' some thinkin'
maybe take a different look at this here life
perhaps i been worryin' about all the wrong things
'stead of worryin' 'bout my boys and my wife

cuz' these kids are damn sure important
they're the one's who'll take off where we quit
i have every confidence that they'll do plumb fine
i tell ya, i ain't worried even one little bit

don't get me wrong, we've got a few problems
but it sure ain't 'nuthin' we can't fix
just some love and paitence and disipline
we'll just throw all that into the mix

so i guess what i'm really tryin' to say
and i can't think of no higher praise
the most important crop that's grown in this country
is all them dang good kids that we all raise

sw: does this mean you might grace our Deadwood celebration with yourself?! :D

Jinglebob: that was a thought-provoking poem. We're looking forward to more at Deadwood.

TX Tibbs: did you write that pigeon one?

Good one.

There once was a guy, TXtibbs,
Who's know to tell the odd fibs
Say's he knows a bird Al
With a horse for a pal,
Just to tickle our ribs.

:D :D

I found a seagull named Hank
Who gave his wing quite a crank
I made a wing repair
Then set him down there
And he walked away with no thanks.

True Story. The gull walked down the road chasing grasshoppers without a care in the world. Travelled almost two miles before I chased him into the neighbour's pasture. Where he remains.

Where have all the poets gone ?

I sit in the crystal light of dawn,
And wonder 'Where have all the poets gone?"
And I ponder it, as the morning breeze,
Whispers through the poplar trees.

Out in my pasture, I hear a bellow,
A great big noise that's long and low.
And from the other end of the old cow track,
The neighbor's bull bellows back.

As I step into the pastured yard,
I think how the early mornings are getting hard.
And though farming is a good life yet,
It seems a living wage is harder to get.

And just down the road a ways,
There's a city where people spend their days,
Where there's traffic jams and horns that blow,
And neighbors that don't even say 'Hello'

It's a place where people are rushed and harried,
And homosexuals want to get married.
And people who have had marriages split,
Use the TV to baby sit.

It's a place where people are never alone,
Because they can always be reached by cell phone,
And the technology is like a million knives,
Slashing away at their meager lives.

But me, I spend my days,
Doing things in 'old fashioned' ways
And meanwhile the rest of the world has moved on,
So, I guess all the cowboy poets are gone.

SASH and Jinglebob---as usual....OUTSTANDING!!!! I read your poems and i can picture my own hubby, sitting on the porch or on horseback or in the cab of his Case and he would be thinking the same things....musings of family, kids, crops, finances, the sunset and sunrise, the lull of the cattle in the distance, the hum of the tractor motor, the future and how lucky we are to be living this life.....money or not!!!

TxTibbs and Kato----you 2 are too funny

Such talent, all of you. How come this site has so many right-brained men? Or is it left-brained :???:

Banker called the other day
The cattle markets low
He had to see me right away;
About the ranch cash flow

He made it clear-old banker dear
His only game was money
I make it-he takes it
Now isn't that real funny

I could of hedged these old fat steers
Back in the month of June
He looked at me kind of queer,
Like I was from the moon

As I explained a margin call
He slowly lost his sand
A year ago when he still had grit
He used to shake my hand

When I bought my cows five years ago
Man, we couldn't lose
Anything I wanted to buy
The man just wouldn't refuse

It's hard when they change the rules
Halfway through the game
A bad risk all at once
When really nothing changed

Slow and steady was my plan
Till I followed his advice
A little more security
Then we roll the dice

Five years of drought-can wear you out
Change the look of things
Like they say-it ain't over
Till the fat girl sings

She's sang her song-I'm afraid to say
They called my note in full
I guess I should of listened closer
To the banker's golden rule

Get a man in over his head
Interest is like chains
Lend money for an umbrella
Want it back if it rains.

great stuff, all of you, all it takes is a scolding from ranchwife and the words just flow like the breeze! JB, that is so true, we need to keep reminding ourselves what crop we are really raising, I have been thinking the same thing recently, just got to get my thoughts in order. Sash that is really good and NR, got a talking to from my banker this week, this isall very fitting. BTW, had several people take measurements of the breaking halter at the fair as we brought it with us and a girl had a rather unruly steer that had to be "educated". thanks again. and nr from the east, I am going to try to make Deadwood at least for the afternoon, may pick up a passenger or two on the way, will let you know as we get closer.

KIDS, AREN'T THEY GREAT

Many are the things, that my kids have done,
Sometimes they've been lost, sometimes they've even won.
At times they can fill you, up with such great pride,
Other times they worry me, other times I've cried.
They can be so disappointing, make you pull out all your hair,
Next day they amaze you, with the knowledge that they share.
At times I have felt like just giving up, leaving them on their own,
But then you have to remember, kids are what makes a house a home.
You teach them and nourish them, and hope they turn out OK,
You always have to remember, tomorrow is another day.
I know this for a fact, for I've nearly given up on my own son,
Til' he came home last week and told me what he'd done.
I asked him what he was doing, I remember it like a dream,
He then proudly announced, "I'm a United States Marine."
Could have knocked me over with a feather, over with one breath,
Before me was a man, not a boy, who's not afraid of death.
All of the worries and turmoil, I'd put up with in his short life,
I could have done cartwheels, you can ask my wife.
I can now rest assured, he's is one of a few great men,
I know where he came from, and know where he has been.
I know that he can shoot, and won't quit a job til' it's done,
At protecting our homeland, our people, men like him are the one.
I thought that most of my energy, and time was a total loss,
Then I got some reality, and guidance from my Boss.
My thoughts and prayers will go with him, as he goes off to boot camp,
I have raised one of the best, he definitely is a grand champ.
If you think that this daddy is not just a little bit proud,
Look in the sky tomorrow, you'll see me floating on a cloud.
As for my son, who was lost for awhile so it seems,
He is one of the few, the proud, a United States Marine.

Sure hope this poem of yours ain't true or at least ain't happening right now. I've been in them deals too and it ain't no fun. Got to remember, a banker makes momney by loaning out his. and if he can loan you more money, he will make more money. Not to say, that there asin't good bankers, but until the 80's at least there were way to many who wanted yto gibve you more than you asked for. I had to learn it the hard way.

Good poems guy's.

I am right handed so I must be left brained, that is if i have a brain!

sw- This just happen? Anyway congratulations on a job well done- and thank him for what he is doing for all of us........

Gosh. That was good, sw. :cry2:

One of our customers has the BEST kids. They are very good parents, though the wife is gone a lot as she works in different places in SE Mt. Sometimes he gets upset with them and is a little harder on them than he needs to be...IMO. But they are such good 'uns that he must do it right most all of the time.

At these times though, I tell him: "that ranch is your living, those kids are your LIFE."

He takes parenting very seriously, though he has fun with his kids. He just has taught them good things as they have grown up. It is fun to see and be around those kids. They come to mind, I guess, because there are quite a few of them and they are ALL good.

The oldest son joined the Navy last year~

Sunday afternoon on RFD-TV we watched American Journey with Red Seagal, Waddie Mitchell and some other fellas. It was really good. I like Waddie's poetry so much; I think it is the way he rolls the words or something. He did "The Wagon in the Fall". I think my very favorite is "The Campfire's Gone Out and The Last Longhorn's Gone" or something like that.

Jinglebob, do you have the words to that poem or do you recall the one I am speaking about? It is sad and very, very good. I'd love to have the words.
