Driving up to Manitoba one year to hunt deer I drove along the eastern edges of Kansas, Nebraska, S. Dakota and N. Dakota.

I gotta say, some of the prettiest places I saw were in S. Dakota.

I can't say any one place has a monopoly on beauty from a ranchers point of view. Some of country that can look pretty bleak has strong grass and good water. Not sure where I'd pick up and move to if I had to.

I guess I'm just partial to hills and that part of S. Dakota was quite hilly from what I recall. It was also late October, one of my favorite times of the year back in the States.

Everything I recall seeing was neat and clean.....postcard pretty. :D

Beautiful indeed, I've visited your province, though I found Alberta much prettier. :D :P

ALBERTA  The view to the west is always blocked by those darn mountains.

Umm, FH, remind me to get you a map for your birthday. He said he was going up the eastern side. :D. And WW, if you ask any rancher from West River (west of the Missouri River) SD, they will tell you that all there is on the east side is farmers. I've seen some near fights over that little tidbit of info. The West River folks will tell ya that those on the other side may have a few head of cows, but those big grain silo's and even bigger tractors makes them farmers at heart.

Yep, all farmers over there with about 20 acres of front lawn to prune!! But, I will have to admit the Black Hills is a beautiful place! I may be biased
Farmers are east river and the ranchers are west river!

Some of the prettiest country I have ever seen was near Sheridan WY, east of the Big Horn Mtns. Another spot was near Jackson Hole. Of course there is gcreekrch's place too, somewhere in BC Canada.

Yep - it is... Thats the country my Mother was born and raised in- and lived until she married Dad... I can remember she told him often that he better realize how much she loved him to come up here and live in this prairie country that is desert in the summer- and little siberia in the winter....
But I used to love going back down to that Sheridan country to visit relatives....

I find it hard to beat the Flint Hills, hope to some day own a hunk of that area....

but no matter where we travel, I love to look at peoples places, and just admire the free spirit and bullheadedness that keeps us all out here doing what we do!

!00 mi House to Quesnel is my favourite drive for Ranch scenery. Love those stacked rail fences and cedar log buildings with the split shake roofs.

The western side of Alberta.... west of hwy 2. Although the southeast corner of AB and southwest corner of SK isn't to bad.
Are there any ranches left the west side of hwy 2? or has it finally been all chopped up into small acreages and subdivisions by now?

I'm pretty partial to the South East Slopes in Alberta but since I have a small chunk of that it would be also fun to dream of owning a bit of the Cyprus Hills in Alberta or Saskatchewan or the Flint Hills in Kansas. We keep coming home and realizing that it is pretty good right here.
