Who's a cougar hunter?

My eldest daughter had a face to face encounter the other day while out riding by herself. She just got off to open a gate and happend to hear something, so she looked across the saddle and about 10 feet away was a cougar in the grass, apparently not happy about being disturbed. She remounted quick like and came back home in tears. I'm pretty glad that little mare handled it reasonably well, at she got her home without dumping her there on the ground.
Anyway, I haven't hunted cougars before, I'd kinda like to get rid of this devil. Neighbours have lost some colts the last couple of years to them and I don't want themn this close to kids, cats, dogs, calves, etc. I suppose hounds are about the best way, how fresh does the trail need to be? I figure some of you must have dealt with these things before so I'm wondering how you did it. Thanks.

We have the odd one that comes through from the river banks. I have only had one personal encounter and by the time I realized what it was it was thankfully heading away from me at full speed.
The neighbor took care of it later that week when it ended up at their dairy and near the calf hutches.

Thank goodness you daughter was physically unharmed.

If you had taken a couple of dogs that like to chase barn cats the same day you would have had it in no time. Fair chance that particular cat is a long ways off now as the normally have big areas in their circle. If it stays dry a good hound will pick up a trail that is a day or two old. Rain wipes out the scent pretty quick.
If you've ever trapped a lynx, you should have no problem catching a cougar.

This post is not intended for reading by bunny sheriffs, greenpeacers, bleeding heart biologists, or any other that is as narrow minded as I am about predators. :D

Hummmmmm . . . seems to me that you got a guy up your direction that keeps cougar hunting simple and lo-tech. He likes to take them out with a binder roller. Maybe you could give him a call . . . :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

We have seen them down here now. I neighbor wrote and article in the local newspaper about seeing one. Then last night coming home from the ranch I seen a young one not quite waist high. That was the first one I have ever seen. Some people in NE Texas are also seeing the black bear to now. Maybe the cougars will eat the wild hoggs we have and leave our cattle and horses along.

Guess my cowdogs are out... the ole tomcat has put the fear of God into them

Cat's are pretty shy. If ya see one it's usually because they are young, ya stepped on em' amd they had to move or they have bad intentions. If ya knew how many times a cat just hid and let ya walk/ride by it would suprise ya. If the cat shows up again i'd contact your wildlife authority and find out what can be done. Here they are protected. But if ya catch one after stock you can kill it and then go through the process of an investigation and redtape. Other folks simply deal with the problem quietly. Good luck and keep your eyes open. Sounds to me like the young lady did EXACTLY what she should have....... made herself look bigger, maintained eye contact and carefull left the scene. Cat's are killing machines. A mom with kittens will kill 2 to 3 deer a week! Call your wildlife folks and keep aware. Good luck

NR is the wild life authority up there.

If I do run into one, the three S rule will be in full effect
Thanks for the input everyone. Cougars have historically been pretty rare around here, but there have been more and more sightings lately. Two were seen about 4 miles apart within an hour a week or so ago. The other day I saw 50 elk one of our hay fields and only 8 calves, at first I assumed wolves or bears were getting them but now I'm wondering.

Cougars have a "home range" of around 50 miles!

I was taught years ago that is a 50 Clover Leaf that takes them 7 Days to work - if you see a cat today you will not see them for 7 days - if you see them more often their Lair may be nearby.

Years ago we had one that Lair was in a Draw across the canyon from the house - every AM she would come out and go on her way.

I was also fun tho watch our local Bobcat teach her kittens to hunt Ground Squirrels.

Dumb City People here put feed out for the Deer in their Yard then get upset to find a Big Cat sitting on their roof...
