Why isn't the border open?

Bill,

If you really seek insight, you may find it studying history. Didn't Canada ban US beef when the Washington cow was found eventhouth Canada had already found more cases from a herd a fraction the size of the US herd?
Canada didn't ban American beef but did temporarily close to live cattle which is where it remains. Canada takes American cattle for slaughter but the US won't take Canadian despite BSE in both countries.

Sandman: "Agman says consumer demand has been declining for some time now....."

Agman has also defined "some time now" which followed the closing of the Canadian border as discretionary spending on beef decreased due in part to higher fuel costs.

You got nothing again!

Actually, the R-CULTers have greatly overstated the affects of Canadian imports. Consider that roughly half of normal Canadian imports are coming down in boxes. When the Canadian imports of boxed beef resumed, our fat cattle market continued to rally. That proves that the closed Canadian border is not the driving force behind our current cattle prices. Increased consumer demand is!

Don't forget also, that half of these boxed imports to the US have left the US for other countries. What was the dollar amount of the added value? Did they help meet a demand the US did not have supply to meet?
