Easy JB that's a running joke up in our country-I'm surrounded by farmland and took alot of flack from the plow jockeys when grain was high and cows were low-so now I just tell them farmer is the 'f' word around me.

One old boy up here runs about 1500 head of cows- hays several hundred acres- and has about 5000 acres of cash crops (wheat, flax, peas, etc.) ...His corporate name is _____ Farms- He told me one time he didn't care what it was called farm, ranch, whatever-- as long as it kept making money :) ....

My husband always points out it's the four letter "F" word and we don't use that kind of language in our house.

It's a running joke between he and my uncles. He teases them about farming and they point out those are big words coming from a man that owns nothing more than a couple of flea-bitten ponies and a 10 year old pickup.
But then between the hired man and a couple of pig farmers, no one can take himself too seriously.

LOL MLA,I guess all around it could be worse, could be a pig farmer{now before anyone takes offence, one of our BEST friends is a pig farmer,we just don't hold it against him}hes also a grain farmer so probably doesn't know better.....JUST JOKING

  Man JB, you sure lit this topic on fire, didn't ya?

I'm not sure why people get so hung up on defining what makes a cowboy. Lets face it, its pretty tough to define.

Is it what you ride? Where in the word "cowboy" does the word horse appear?

Is it how how many cows you own? 1 or 100,000, they still need tending.

Is it how many acres your paddocks are? If a 50 acre chunk of grass keeps 50 head happy for a month or so, you're awful dumb not to cross fence that section of land. Nowhere in the word "cowboy" does the word dumb appear.

Is it how you handle your stock? How you doctor them? I realize that nowhere in the word "cowboy" does the word "headgate" appear, but then neither does the word "rope". Rope does appear in a slang expression for those with limp wrists. Does that make them cowboys?

Personally, I don't think there is a "thing" that helps define a cowboy. Its who y'are. Either y'are one, or y'aren't one. And the only person who can tell you that y'are one is another one.

Good point Cattleco.I believe Greg is a cowboy, not because he wears wranglers, cowboy boots, and a cowboy hat...hes a cowboy because of who he is! Hes a loyal friend till the day he dies,he takes a handshake as a agreement!Doesn't understand if someone doesn't honor a handshake! His family is no.1 and ALWAYS tells us theres five people he would gladly die for! When he speaks people listen because he doesn't do it often but when he does it means somthing.Pride and honor are AWFULLY important to him! The friend I mentioned earlier thats a pig farmer, also a cowboy in mine and Gregs eyes, had a terrible farm accident a few years back,he cowboyed up and made it through,to this day he fights the effects of the accident and also has a blood disorder that is requiring him to take Kidney dialisis, that hes taking on his own at home and is on the transplant list...we have NEVER seen him give up or be unhappy or cry why me...to us hes a cowboy!Hes the most loyal caring friend we have, thinks of everyone else before himself...THATS a cowboy! and hes never been on a horse!

I admire Baxter Black as he seems to be pretty sharp and can get a handle on about anything.

His definition of what a cowboy is.

Just look at their IRS form and see what they put down for "occupation".

A cowboy only has two knots in his rope.

A cowboy is a person who can take a horse and a rope and baling wire and fix a prolapse in a cow, by himself, in a section pasture.

How many think they can do the last one?

We had a cowboy poetry group at one time. One of the first ones to come was one of the first to quit. He had cowboy'd in his youth and had turned to saddle making when he got older and a aquired a wife.

He said, when I asked why he quit coming, "I got real tired of old ladies doing poems about flowers and such. I thought I was going to hear poems about wild rides and wild cattle."

We talked about starting a new group called "real cowboy poet's" and to get in you'd have to be able to saddle a snorty horse and rope a calf in a pasture and tie him down. By yourself. If you were too old to do it anymore, but had done it in the past and had two people of good moral standings to vouch for you, we'd let you in.

Funny, we didn't get too many who could or even wanted to join!

And as I said before, I sure didn't mean to offend anyone.

Funny, you go back to where there are lotsa of farmers and they call someone a cowboy, when they want to insult them and in mostly ranching country, they call someone a farmer, when they want to insult them.

I didn't mean to unsult anyone.

The way I read it, if you were insulted and thot' I was calling you a farmer and taking insult from that, then evidently you don't think very much of yourself or of farmers.

Where would you get your food(other than grass fattened beef) if it weren't for the farmer?(and I'll bet there are farmers who raise grass fattened beef too)

Where would you get your grain to feed your cows, if it weren';t for farmers.

Farmer shouldn't be a dirty word. Neither should cowboy or rancher.

Jinglebob- Its diversified Agriculture  When I'm sitting on a swather or combine, I wear the "farmer" hat (altho I'm like Greg and have most of the grain land leased out)...When I'm on a horse or pulling a calf I wear the "cowboy" hat... Still trying to figure out what hat to wear when I get lazy and take the new 4 wheeler to trail cows :???:

I used to chat on babycenter.com a lot... One lady's handle had "cow" in it. I visited with her some, and she and her hubby had about 700 head of cattle, no farming at all. But she said they were farmers. It turns out that towards the east coast (I think she was from west virginia or someplace east) they have the definitions completely "backwards". (backwards from mine, not theirs I guess.) She said that farmers have cattle, ranchers have tractors and grow crops. Interesting how one definition can get so many in an uproar, yet is defined the opposite in different areas.

As for me and my hubby... We are RANCHERS pure and simple, and yes we do get a little hot under the collar if someone calls us something else... Not that I don't like farmers, hell my Dad is one. But we all have different ways of doing things and well, like I said before, we ranch.

We have all chosen our lifestyles because that's what we want and I guess that's why we react from our gut when someone tries to lump us into another group. We put so much of ourselves into our work. farmer, rancher, dog, cow, maybe I would react the same if someone called me a lawyer.

Take Care

Around here a cowboy is someone who works for a rancher.. or basically a "farm hand" on a livestock farm, sometimes the feedlot folks are called that too.

People out west would probably call us Farmers here because really, we are on farm ground and it is hard to think of anyone in Illinois raising cattle for many. Farmers around here on the other hand would never call us farmers because we don't drive combines every fall to bring in the corn and beans. Heck, I don't even own any equipment that is used in plowing, planting or harvesting...

The one difference is that it doesn't matter if you have cattle, pigs or grain. All the places out here are called farms, but no one local would ever call me a farmer.. Might be more than one reason for that however

Yer sposed to wear a helmet. :P

Hmmmm, that splain's alot

Rod

Yeah you're right, but I never have worn one...That is one thing Montana did right- told the feds to stick the helmet law where the sun don't shine...If you are over 18 you don't need to wear one- either on a cycle or ATV......

Spent the afternoon on the 4 wheeler going around and patching fence on the old home section-- grass is green and the crocus's are blooming- snowbanks only left in the shaded areas and the coulees are still running water so next week will be time to take some cows out.......

I think of a one word definition when i think of cowboy: dad

My father is the true definition of a cowboy to me. He is a horseman, a cowman, and he takes care of and respects the land that helps him provide a living doing what he loves. He eats, breaths, and lives cattle and the production of the next generation of them. He has a way with horses a repect and fondness for them. He takes care of the land that takes care of his cattle by respecting what it can give and knowing when it needs backed off of. Respecting the land not abusing it.

So Jinglebob, We are farmers what are you saying?? We are dumb? What qualifies as cowboy or farmer? And whats wrong or better? Inlighten me. Is it wrong to own a tractor? Apparently you know more, so clue me in...

OOooo, did I touch a sore spot?

There is nothing wrong with farmers. They raise the food we eat.

A farmer would rather use a 4 wheeler than a horse and would work their cattle afoot rather than use a horse.

A farmer would use a calf hook and a cowboy would use a rope.

Farmers motivation for having cattle is too either make money or to utilize roughage or grain, that he/she can make more money off from than if he/ she were to sell it. Cowboys have cattle as they don't know what else to do to utilize their grass. And they don't want to run sheep on it. And they like to ride after and rope at cattle.

Farmers would tend to run their cattle in smaller pastures and have them more confined while a cowboy would rather have the cattle out grazing and not want them as confined.

Farmers tend to farm, and cowboys tend to cattle.

Neither is any better or worse than the other.

These are very loose classifications.

JMHO

These are all generalizations and should in no way be construed as limiting factors. One mans farmer is another mans cowboy.
As with all generalizations, the fact that they are generalizations, would make them wrong.

We use a calf hook and a 6 wheeler. It's only the two of us, we used to make fun of 4-wheelers and tagged on horseback, until we started feeling our age. I also remember 947 (1989 born) cow hit my horse with my very young daughter with me just trying to move them to another pasture. I guess that makes us farmers. It works for us. :!:
