MCOOL is an interesting topic - and as Old Timer knows I always supported it despite it making me unpopular in some Canuck circles.
Be that as it may - in order for the US of A to maintain the export markets they want to keep - AND feed their domestic population - they MUST import beef.
I often wondered which beef got exported to fill those markets.
Canuck beef that is bought by US of A companies?
Canuck beef that is imported by US of A companies?
Canuck beef that is processed by US of A companies?
Or Canuck beef that is exported as American product by US of A companies?
Without that Canuck beef there would be a lot of unemployed Americans in the US of A.
I am not so sure you could stand much more.
Or would it just take another federal subsidy to help the various American companies and corporations survive in the US of A?
Mind you, you could always bring in that high quality beef that is grown south of your borders and feed it to your own folks while you send the home grown stuff off shore.
In the end the Canuck beef gets a bad rap from the American rancher because the American companies are buying, importing, processing, and selling it.
Seems to me the target should not be on the Canuck - it should be turned inwards - to the US ofd A corporations that drive the program - but that is a far more difficult target and they have enough money to make the lives of US of A ranchers difficult - so instead there is a divert and attack strategy and attitude that is perpetuated and meekly followed by many at the primary producer level.
Quite likely encouraged and possibly even financed behind the scenes by the very people who benefit from the present status quo. (No conspiracy theory - just a possiblity)
Who really is getting rich off of this? It takes a surprizingly small amount of money to get some folks to do things.
Only shows how little the average rancher knows about business.
