Old Man Winter will just not give up his hold on this country.... :( We've had a couple of days of good snow melt- and now he wants to dump on us again.....

looks like it could be another long weekend.....

This is the forecast for eastern MT- and western/central ND...

A SPRING STORM WILL MOVE THROUGH THE AREA SATURDAY THROUGH
SUNDAY. THIS STORM WILL LIKELY BEGIN AS RAIN THEN TRANSITION TO
ACCUMULATING SNOW SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY. 4 TO 10 INCHES OF
HEAVY WET SNOW ARE POSSIBLE WITH THIS STORM...AND WITH GUSTY EAST
WINDS
COULD HAVE SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS ON AREA ROADS AND POWER LINES.

I talked with one of the Landfill employees- and he said after the last week of storms- folks were hauling in dead calves sometimes by the whole pickup load.....

Same thing here OT. Winter has wore out its welcome. Not going to invited back next year either.

Well come on down guys, it's in the 50s/60s, with no snow in sight. Just be sure to bring along some feed since we're going back into a drought   .

I'm sorry to hear of another storm headed your way.
It rained here in the night, but didn't get below 32.
Down by Ekalaka it rained all day yesterday AND all night.
We have 80% chance of moisture tomorrow, but they are
calling for rain...it's really wet out there now. We are loading
hay that we sold and this isn't helping getting the trucks
in an out. But it's been dry here for so long, that the moisture
in the form of rain, is nice. This might be 3 years in a row
of good moisture.

WR, we got about 6 inches of good snow on Tuesday. What did you get?

The reason we don't need another snowstorm- or more snow- or moisture...We still have plenty...The calves love to play king of the hill on the snowbanks- but this morning when I fed I heard a momma bellering and found a calf that had broken thru the crust and was wallowing in a 5 foot deep drift...

Luckily was able to hook a leg with the calf hook and jerk him out without burying myself...

If you look right behind the pickup box- you can see a gopher scurrying across the snowbank heading back to his hole in my pole pile... He was sitting there chirping at me when I fed this morning....

Could have been me at 2am this morning OT. Was getting a first year heifer in to calve. Hit a deep spot of mud, got stuck and went went splat trying to get unstuck.
Had to crawl to the cement pad that the waterer is set on just so I could stand up.

Luckily the heifer went right in the barn and had a nice heifer calf.
I got an early shower.

Do you guys have trouble with rabbits getting into the feed piles. We had it where they would just devastate a feed pile, hundreds of them little suckers.

We had a few more than normal this year... Night checks you could find 20-30 running around the feedgrounds-- altho my dogs kept them out of the hay pens to some extent... Morning feedings usually gave me a chance to make sure the 22-250 or 250 Savage was still sighted in- and keep the number reduced ...

No deer or antelope damage for me this year- as the snow got so deep so quick they couldn't even get trails broke to get to the stacks :D

Some in other areas didn't have the same luck....

I bought some $20T year old wheat straw today to start feeding with the good second/third cutting I have in case I need to feed til the 4th of July...

It has some partially hailed out heads in it- and cows like it better than the green alfalfa/grass hay... and what they don't eat gives them a little dry bedding for awhile.....

I have about 20 days feed at the north place that I would usually use around mid April when I move the cows to summer pasture-- but that hay is 3/4 mile off the highway in foot deep snow- and looking thru the binoculars it appears the snow is over the stack and may not be open to get to without hauling in a loader until about the 4th of July.... :(

I'll bet once it starts melting it will happen in a hurry. The only problem is it will be muddier than heck.

It seems for me the Elk do the most damage to feed in the piles or in windrows. Not to say that deer don't do big time damage. I even saw the deer feed on cedar trees. The rabbits could do a lot. They could make round bales where you couldn't pick them up with a bale bed. The rabbits would also feed on soapweeds. When the snow melted all the soapweeds had flat tops. I remember that you could always go to the bale pile and shoot 50 and then when you went back you could do it again.

I'm glad to hear you got some moisture. Unfortunately it snowed every place but here. Maybe next time!
