Do you know the proper hat Etiquette?
Our employees at the Matador Ranch do.
The popularity and function of headwear in society has changed significantly over time, and consequently, so has hat etiquette. Please refer to the guidelines below to better understand proper hat-wearing behavior.
Men Can Leave Hats On When
•They are outside
•At an athletic event, indoors or out
•In public buildings like post offices, airports, or hotels
•On public transportation
•In elevators
Men Should Take Off Hats When
•They are sitting down to eat a meal
•In a house of worship unless required by religion
•Public buildings like schools, town halls, and libraries
•When the National Anthem is playing
•In restaurants and cafes
 
And, btw, just how many restaurants have hat racks for baseball or cowboy hats? I always have to put mine on the table or empty chair at the table I'm sitting at.

Sort of like tattoos/body piercings, times have changed, even for cowboy hat etiquette. That is, like it or not.

I have always found a place when sitting at a table weather at a 5-star restaurant to a banquet at a convention hall.

As far as being "judgmental", most people are in one way or another, but don't want to admit it. Smoking is a very judgmental topic and there are plenty of folks that refuse to friends with smokers. Wife and I are exactly that way. Another very judgmental topic is foul language. There are those that don't care what words they use, even sitting in a restaurant in public. Then there are those that absolutely won't associate with anyone that says the "F" bomb. Again, that's us.

I judge people by how they treat people, how they treat livestock and how big their heart is!!! If you will not be friends with somebody who smokes or has a tattoo, well then I'm sure sorry for you. You've missed out on meeting some wonderful and kind and fine people in your life. If you want to judge folks in that way (and yet you're also prone to believe somebody in the PRCA is worthy of being an idol just because they throw a rope), we're living on two completely different planets. I sure feel sorry for ya. I'd hate to live life judging people the way you do.

And that is exactly why you do not and will not EVER, understand ranchers and rural people. Your mind is already made up. And frankly, that is sad

About 90% of the places I eat at have a hat rack. But I also live 100 miles from civilization. Folks out here Still live the code of the west.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!! You do that in Wyoming (or Montana), and you are asking to have someone knock it off your head. A cowboy pastor here was run out of town for giving the eulogy at a funeral and leaving his hat on. He wasn't from Wyoming, and he had to leave over that little episode.
He's lucky he didn't get it removed for him. Everyone was mad about it, even the family.

Removing your hat is a sign of ULTIMATE respect!!!!!!!!!

Call us old-fashioned, call us what you want, that's the way it is!!!

I take mine off in any house and of course church. I don't take mine off going in the feed store, hardware store tire shop etc. if I sit down to eat mine usually comes off at home or in town. If it's a place that I think the hat should come off at the door, I usually leave it in the truck. Sometimes I forget.

Lucky for Pastor Jerk Poophead It wasn't for one of my loved ones or there would have been two caskets. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
 
Well, at Wyoming Rib & Chop there was NO hat racks at all. And, these restaurants are in Wyoming, as in Sheridan and Laramie where we ate dinner. And, if a person sits at the bar, like we did the last night in Sheridan, there is nowhere to place a hat. Wife wore hers while she was eating in the dining room as well as did a young lady wearing a Flat Hat. As for me, only at dinner do I take it off in a restaurant.

Heck, even at the Centennial Livestock Auction in Ft. Collins, 20 miles north of us, there is a small cafe' inside and I've seen folks (ranchers) wearing their straw, felt hats or baseball caps while eating breakfast or lunch. And, these are ranchers from Colorado's eastern plains and even south Wyoming buying/selling cattle.

I've been in both Boseman and Billings and never seen men take off their hats in a restaurant.

Just remember, wife and I are not ranchers and never have been, but definitely respect the job.

Well, all I know is what I see! Even YouTube video shows men wearing their hats during a Cowboy Church Service. Perhaps Cowboy Church is more for the "rodeo" types or suburban horse owners, I don't know. All I know is that Coy Hoffman wears his during his online, and in person, Cowboy Church when Preaching.

Perhaps ranchers and rodeo people have different Code of the Old West.

Well, my wife has asthma and simply can't be around smokers. Funny, but I did a topic about smoking in a different forum a few years ago and there were those that said "you do know that you are missing out on some nice people by not being friends with smokers?" Another member wrote, "why do you folks leave him and his wife alone about smoking! If they choose not to be friends with smokers, that's entirely up to them."

So, no matter what we judge people about.........looks, language they use, smoking, drugs, drinking or whatever, there are those, like us, that don't care what others think of us. Yes, we idolize PRCA World Champions and love the pictures we've got of us with many of them. You simply have a different outlook on others than we do. That should be fine and not criticized at all. That's why we live in American, so we can make choices, or judgments, of who we want to associate with.
 
And, with the old man eating dinner at Wyoming Rib & Chop in the dining room "carrying" and one of you are going to tell him to take off his hat? I'd really hate to hear what he'd say to one of you telling him that, especially since he is "carrying".
 
A. I generally don't tell others how to behave unless it is something absolutely out of line..

B. If I do it will be done in a polite manner.

C. I don't care if someone is packing. What is he going to do shoot me for politely suggesting he take his hat off?

I have noticed on the Cowboy Channel when they are panning the crowd during the national anthem there are men who don't take their hats off.

As far as the old man goes, just depends on how he takes your "politely asking". There are those that will say, even when politely asked, "get out of my face" or "leave me alone".

As far as rodeo goes, PRCA isn't really strict on Bareback Riders (first event at most rodeos) leaving their hat on during National Anthem while they are preparing for their ride.

As far as the fans go, I have no idea why there are those men that will continue to wear their hat (baseball or cowboy) when the American Flag is brought around the arena and/or when the National Anthem is done. Sometimes I will see someone remind a guy to remove his hat.

Want to hear a joke? A team roper telling a bareback rider when his event is run and the PRCA policy. I would make more of a comment but I refuse to get into a battle of wits with an unarmed man.
 
We are now researching South Las Vegas. We know about the summer heat, but being that we will both fully retired, actually I am now, we'd either stay inside or play the penny slots at a local, nicely cooled, casino. When people are of retirement age, that's exactly what many do.........goof off and have fun. The old "work days" are all over.

Why Vegas? Well, in December the NFR is there and we had a ball last December when we flew there during that. South Point Hotel/Casino and their huge Equestrian Center, is there and they have some kind of horse, rodeo event that goes on there year-around. A VA Hospital as well.

But, for now, Vegas is simply a thought, nothing planned. But, with South Point and Orleans there, plenty of rodeo stuff goes on.
