    raising twins

What is your take on leaving both twins on a cow? We raise Angus/cross cows, on grass all year round with hay/cake supplement during the winter. We had a set of twins and I forced the ranch hand to get a cow in that lost her calve two days before and draft one of the twins to this cow. It...

    Banding calves at birth?

To the people here who say that vaccinations right after birth are probably useless - would that, in your opinion, include a shot of simple C&D? Also useless until the calf is a few weeks old?

    Mustang addition---

Two cremellos or perlinos - what are the odds, well matched pair! If I have two horses with very similar build and color I look at the their manes - looking at the pictures I would dare to say that the same horse is to the left and to the right in each picture. Looking forward to see you...

    VOTE- Barns/Outbuildings

Boy, you sure get around! Why don't you post some stories about your travels somewhere here - if you have a minute being stuck at the airport ... nobody travels nowadays by plane without being stuck on some airport ... ;-) Have a great trip!

    Mustang Pictures-----------

Great pictures again, Mustang! I wished it wouldn't be so far away, I would love to use my camera on these views! But enjoying them every day anyway - just a glance on my calender, spotting a paint this month :) Good to see that they survived the winter fairly decent. I've seen pastured ranch...

    Ranching in Kazakhstan

I didn't even know that you have any pastures in Saskatchewan. According to what is sold here as hay from Saskatchewan every Canadian Thistle patch is called "Alfalfa field" in your country! :D :D :D

    Ranching in Kazakhstan

Surely an interesting scenario there in Kazakhstan. I have to admit that I can not picture the situation at all. What did surprise me the most is that that you said that you are there for 3 month now but haven't even seen the pastures? How is that possible? Have you seen the cows at all? Would...

    Ear Tags

Why do you need to know the age of the cow at glance (spot the eartag color) at the calve? I can imagine it is good to know the heifer calves from the older cows calves, but do not understand for older cows. What color(s) eartags do you use for your cows?

We tag only with the cow number (commercial herd), it does make it easier to identify pairs if the cow doesn't stick with her calf for one reason or the other. Since we give C&D soon after calving we catch the calves anyway when young. We used to tag heifers in the right ear, bulls in the left...

    Feeding time for calving cows

Thanks for all the replies - very interesting and not much unlike from what I expected - many different ways to look at it. I was wondering if feeding at night wouldn't screw up the cows natural feeding habit - grazing mostly during the day and resting at night? @Wilsonconsulting - Why do you...

    Feeding time for calving cows

Most ranchers - as far as I know - feed their cows first thing in the morning. Now it was suggested that feeding calving cows in the late afternoon would keep them busy with full stomachs over night, pursuing them to calve during the day rather than at night. Your opinions or thoughts?

Small world. JW neighbors the ranch I work for, I work a lot of cattle with them, and Bruce is my next door neighbor. We should visit when you come back to hunt! :-)

How cool is that! You picked the ranch that has Devils Tower in their livingroom - we've got it only in the back yard. You've probably been in Zanni's house and saw their view? Stunning!!!

The guy in "Close Encounters of the Third kind" used to ask the same question - finally ended up in North East Wyoming at the Devils Tower First National Monument :-) This is the side of the monument that tourists usually do not get to see (except close up from a little trail around the base of...
