    Calf prices

This might be correct if heavier calves still bring $1.70, but that is unlikely. If your 750 lb calves at 1.70 are worth $1275 and 810 lb calves at 1.65 are worth $1336.50, you are only getting pain $1.025 per pound of gain. Brings your profit to about $1.14/hd/day. Still pretty good in my...

    Denny and others

I have a Makita lc1230 carbide chop saw. It's tough. Takes somewhere around 20 seconds to cut 8 inch I beam. (Actually cuts all but the last quarter inch). They are more expensive, but definitely worth it in my opinion. Actually got mine off CL for $200.

Branding cattle with just 3 letters and 3 numbers

Think I'll give up. If you said without repeating a number or letter, I think the answer would be 8,087,040,000 as there are 26 x 25x 24 x 10 x 9 x 8 = 11,232,000 unique combinations of 3 letters and 3 numbers without repeats. Each of these unique combinations could be arranged 6! = 720...

Branding cattle with just 3 letters and 3 numbers

this is right if it has to be three consecutive letters and three numbers such as aaa 111, but if it can be a1a 23b, it will be much greater. Not sure I can figure it out, but I'll think on it a while. Sorry, this is redundant, I missed a whole page of posts.

    Don't make my expensive mistake...

rsl or grassfarmer, How do you keep them from moving too much during the injection? Do they just stack there head on the next cow's hip? Just asking because I don't find it all that easy in the squeeze and would certainly prefer something that was faster.

    Don't make my expensive mistake...

What brand chute are you using? I've heard good and bad reviews on the neck extenders. Seems like they would be really handy, but I talked to someone with a Big Valley Silencer chute who did not like them.

    Grass/Corn finished vs Grass/Grass finished

I would have to think some of your numbers are wrong. At 60% yeild, an 850 lb steer would only hang at 510 lbs. The final cutout would be about 2/3 of that. I wonder if there is some error in communication between you and the butcher.

question about "slide" when selling cattle

I'm not sure I follow this. If you lose 8 cent per 100 lbs, wouldn't that be 2 cent per 25 lbs? Should the 625 lb calves bring 98 cent?

    Gberry's Murray Greys

I'm pretty sure most of these bulls received grain (and likely in large amounts). But some, Hobo and Power in particular are known for easy keeping daughters.

    Gberry's Murray Greys

I have used Gambler and have some nice calves out of him. Our main herdsire is a Gambler grandson. We have really only used AI for 2 breeding seasons now. We did use Orlando last year and he has thrown some really thick, growthy steers. Didn't have any females out of him. We expect quite...

    Gberry's Murray Greys

Actually, none of those are of my breeding. They are all AI sires some of which I have used and some of which I am considering. Maybe later today I'll put some on this thread to see what everyone thinks.

    Winter seed

Thanks RobertMac. That looks real good. I know you'll be turning in on that rye before the ryegrass is ready. Have you notice any damage to the ryegrass because of this? I understand that rye is not as palatable as ryegrass and was thinking the cows might eat the smaller ryegrass and really...

    Winter seed

It looks good. Thanks for the info on your planting technique. We have found that we have to disk to get a good stand, but I thought maybe rye would do a little better than ryegrass if we no-tilled it. We have a pretty good stand of rye this year by disking, broadcasting and then disking...

    Winter seed

RobertMac, Did you no-till the rye (that's how it appears)? It looks pretty good. We've tried no-tilling ryegrass for the last couple of years in bermuda and bahia pastures with very little luck. I'm surprised at your seeding rate. I thought you were supposed to put about 100lbs rye to the...

    Dectomax

Doc I have to disagree with you a little bit. The reason antibiotics are not as effective today as they were 20 years ago is not because they were only 80% effective, its because they are used inappropriately. For instance (using humans as I know much less about cows) when a patient has a sore...
