Can't Afford a Bull This Year!

I just made a deal to lease some today. $700 a head. He keeps then til' turnout time. If one dies, I pay half the cost between the lease price and what he would have been worth by the pound. Sounded kind of high a while back, now sounds like a better deal, seeing what these bulls are bringing.

Sounds pretty good... I watched some of the Profitmaker bull sale/lease today--- and they were leasing a lot of 18 month old/2 year old bulls for $1500- $2500...Some higher than that- altho I also saw some yearling bulls leasing for around $1000...They may have gotten lower later when I wasn't in the house..

North Ridge Ranching were you at crossroads and muirheads bull sales,if so how did they sell?Erixons bull sale is on the 29th,they have some black simmental bulls there and they have good cattle, there catalogue and so is sunny valley simmentals is on saskatoon livestock sales website.

Crossroads and Robb/Hoegl both averaged over $7000 across the board. The better end sold really good. Muirheads is on Monday. I have both Erixons and Sunny Valley catalogue's. There is one in Camrose ( Skors ) on the same day as Sunny Valley's. Bought one from there a couple years back and he turned out real good. They have alot more to choose from there as well. Terry Skoretz was a large commercial breeder and then went into purebreds. He seems to have a real handle on what the commercial guys are looking for.

This guy averaged 3500 on his yearlings. I did not want the highest ratio bulls. These are white, we are putting them on red cows. I want easy calving. The hybred vigor will make extra pounds and this guy's lower end bulls are probably as good or better than many peoples higher end bulls.

Not sure if the greyhound comment was intended for me. If it was, what do you mean, Canadian Angus?

Seen those type of bulls that you are looking at, hard feeding buggers that he can't sell. Think about it, if there that good they would sell.

Either you have a magic spell on him, or they are real bad.

No, he keeps some back just for this. Maybe you missed the part where I said his poor average bulls would be better than many's top. I am crossbreeding, will not keep replacements out of them. I do not need his top bulls. The mothers will more than make up for any shortcomings in the fathers, just like always. We are not out to raise the heaviest calves in the country. Just profitable ones.

So many forget, it's not the gross that pays the bills, but the net.

I breed to improve it for the cattleman, if you are doing that, buy replacements and hope someone else does the work. Please remember the feedlots will remember your calves that don't cut it and with the Bull was!

Thank you for tr advice. I am a relative newcomer to raising cattle, having only done it on this place for a short time. Maybe 40 years or so, so I sure appreciate you helping me out.

Wasn't trying to rain on your parade, just seen the leasers in action, good way to spread STD's too.

Yup, I wouldn't use any bull that was not virgin or tested. If we like the calves from them this year, he will let us lease the same bulls again next year.

Struck out again. Took the lowest priced one we liked out of the Black Simmentals up to $7000 and still didn't get him bought. The other 3 I wanted went for even more. Stopped in Saskatoon to look at some on the way home. I guess I will send the old man to bid on those tomorrow.

I take it that was at Muirheads bull sale?So how did those bulls average out on price? What is the average price on the reds, and what is it on the blacks?

Thanks for the price qoute North Ridge,I bought 2 of erixons black bulls last year, and so far i'm really impressed with them.Bulls held there condition very well just on a forage ration, there calves are being born very easy and they are growing like weeds, now i just got to see what there weaning weights will be,but the way there growing i don't think i will be disappointed. My old black simmi bull has buggered up his leg,but i'm still hoping i can use him for the start of the breeding season. So i'm hoping to buy another bull there tomorrow just for back up,but i can get by with just a red one.So i will stay out of your Dads way and hopefully you can get 1 of those black bulls bought up.Good luck!!

bull are much more affordable here in the South. We have been breeding top performance Simmentals and Sim-Angus with 30 years of A.I. and E.T.work and have sent bulls all over the U.S. and international as well. Our top selling bull this year went for $ 5300 for half interest. He also had a 17.7 inch REA and a 3.93 IMF on a 6 frame with 39cm testicles and 1315 ywt. Other really good bulls are selling here for $3000-$3500. You guys need to come South!!!![/b]

I hope I can get one as well but I am sure there is one for both of us. I appreciate the gesture though. I am pretty sure they aren't the last good bulls to sell this year.

Best Bet Sale (Ian Mitchell) is in Williams Lake BC on April 7. He has good cattle and BC is normally cheaper than the prairies for bulls.

Check BC Livestock for catalog when it is available.
