Driving a bunch home for the neighbor

Those storm clouds make a cool background. Neat pics and story.

Not trying to cause conflict, but do the ranches, and a great many other Mormon owned businesses enjoy a tax exempt status?

Cal, I'm no expert on taxes or churches but I belive the ranch is exempt as it is church owned. The beef does not get sold on the market as it goes into a church owned feedlot and then into the welfare system run by the church to help needy folks. Don't quote me on that though as that's just what i understand and that is usually lacking in merit!

From Deseret Ranches web site.
"For over half a century, Deseret has functioned primarily as a cattle operation, producing some of the best quality cattle in Florida. We specialize in producing quality calves that are sold after weaning to operations around the country to enter the nation's food market. Our reputation as one of the best cattle operations has taken decades to achieve, and is a result of long-term effort and innovation."

I don't doubt that is true for deseret ranch in Florida, but I do know this ranch goes into the welfare system. Not sure why it matters. :D Lots of churches raise money to build churches, feed the needy and further the Lord's work.

Oh I agree lots of churches raise money to feed the needy and further the lords work. I'm not sure how many compete with private ranchers with tax free status. :?

Good shots as usual. 31 riders is all, you should have called. If I would have known you needed help I would have came down. :)

I really like the flat photos with the storms coming in. very nice.

Interesting posts.

Not sure how taxation of church PROPERTY, as opposed to FACILITIES where services are held, goes from state to state, but do know that in SD where a small piece of farm/ranch land was donated to my Lutheran church years ago, we pay property taxes on that land just as any rancher would.

I believe when we owned a parsonage that we did not pay taxes on that land, but am not totally certain of that. We sold that recently, too, and just own our church lot and side yard now, which I'm certain is not taxed, tho the yard was owned by others a few years ago, and isn't an absolute necessity, tho it would be inconvenient if there was no place for the kids to play outdoors.

I'm more concerned about income taxes where churches own businesses, or lease out buildings to non-church entities, and maybe the collective farming type operations of some of the colony type religious groups, as that does seem an unfair competitive edge against other farmers and businessmen, no matter how much 'good works' they may do. Something about "render unto Caesar" troubles me a bit when considering what religious groups should get tax exemptions upon.

I guess i look at things a little different. WE ALL COMPETE WITH EACH OTHER! Does that mean we hope other producers go under to pad our wallets? Does that mean we wish our nieghbors ill so our calf check is higher? Living in Utah, i have watched as plane load (Jumbojet) after plane load of humanitarian supplies went to hurricane victims, tsunami survivors, earthquake and fire and drought and ect. ect. ect., loaded with welfare supplies. All agriculture gets subsidies! If the folks in the LDS church wanta raise cattle, good for them. If the Catholics or Lutherans or 7th day adventists want to, good for them. If they catch some tax breaks, good for them. It aint like folks in Ag don't get them either. Off road diesel!! Hello!!!! Sorry i mentioned who i was helping. But if you folks living in glass houses wanta throw rocks i think your a tad silly! Forget i posted the stupid pictures. Didnt realize how contriversal some dudes herding cows would be!

Easy does it H, we're all entitled to our own opinion, no matter how narrow-minded it may seem to others. Lots of tax paying individuals and entities donate to other causes also.

My personal stance is that if one business has to pay taxes, all of them should. Like you said, we do get some breaks but not what businesses operating under the pretext of religion do.

The story was a good one, keep up the good work. :D

You have to make a profit to pay taxes. How many ranchers really pay taxes.

I do. :?

malarkey, bet you could'nt buy a low cut dress for a hummingbird with the money you pay in taxes.
good luck

Oh i agree on the low cut dress purchase with my profit but our accountant has us paying tax on our inventory trying to move that into the tax payed inventory so when we are done ranching we have something left. Net result we pay taxes every year, but should have tax payed inventory when we sell out. Hopefully the tax pay every year is at a lower rate then when we cash in our chips. Any body else have this same type of scenario?

Who pooped in the pool? I think a difference of opinions is interesting. This was all done politely. If you just want benign conversation try the coffee shop. I posted pictures the other day of the ethanol plant that I've been hauling from. Nobody complained about the ethanol mandate, nobody commented on the price of corn, no discussion on feeding ddg, or the prices around the country, or the loading techniques.....no conflict or discussion, how boring. I'm not ranting, I just think it's interesting when others take an offshoot of a subject and give us their opinion.......but then I like pictures of machinery, too, as well as reading about and seeing pictures of the uncommon, so what do I know.

Cal there is a question about DDG's and price on your thread that I am curious about too. I like machinery pics as well. I sure don't mind it here but get most of my fix at The Combine Forum.

It is a great strategy, we still have a few land payments left that use up any available cash for that but it will happen here in time as well.
