Here, ranchers are the non-intesive livestock raisers. Cattle, Sheep and Horses for the most part.

Farmers are the ones that mostly raise crops(farm). Or the more intensive production of livestock, such as pigs or chickens.

 Ranchers can raise sheep evidentally ........so what are ranchers who herd sheep called?

I've heard them called lots of names!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HEY NOW!!!

I was told once (when working at a dino dig on a sheep ranch in WY) while setting up my camp for the nite to be reeeaaaallllyyy quiet when zipping my sleeping bag up or down.

It seems the sound of a zipper in WY can cause a sheep stampede!!!

A sheep farmer was flying his sheep to new pastures when the plane conks out.

In fear he shouts " grab a parachute"....his co pilot says, " what about the sheep?. " F--k the sheep" shouts the farmer....the co pilot hesitates and says " Do you think we got time?"

Farmers in my opinion are those individuals who gain over 50 % of their income from the sale of grain, vegetables, alfalfa, hay, wheat and other crops. :D They also seem to have nicer equipment then most ranchers. They seem to enjoy spending lots of hours in the equipment to hope for rain to make the crops grow. :D

Ranchers in my opinion are those individuals who gain over 50% of their income from the sale of cattle. :D These individuals seem to enjoy tractors older then their grown children and the fresh open air and bugs. They use tractors for putting up hay for their cattle, moving hay for their cattle, feeding hay to their cattle, and grading tanks for their cattle to water. :D

Growing up people who raised pigs were called farmers. But it seemed if one had pigs they were also marketing crops.

Sheep people...........well here we call them Wyoming people. Not at all that I personally think there is anything wrong with raising sheep I guess it's just an old thought from generations before. I really do wonder what Sheep producers fall under.

We raised a bum lamb this year just for the joy of a couple kids and actually the lamb thinks he's a dog and runs after the kids and follows the adults. He's made a great pet and I'm pretty sure he's not gonna be a member of the livestock for sale. Thank goodness for that or I'd have to question my rancher status.

To clarify I was laughing at the joke.........

Two sheepherders were driving down the road. The passenger asked the fella driving if he could make a U-turn? The driver answered, "No" but I can sure make her eyes water.

Definition of a U-joint: A Basque whorehouse.

Found in a book THE QUOTABLE AMERICAN (edited by Alex Barnett, 2002):

"About the only thing that will make a Wyoming cattleman reach for his gun nowadays is to call him a "farmer." A "rancher," he wants it clearly understood, drinks only canned milk, never eats vegetables, and grows nothing but hay and whiskers." John Gunther, Inside U.S.A. (1947)

To me the difference between a rancher and a farmer is the way of life. Around here we are considered farmers. But, we have to grow corn and beans to pay the bills. We have a neighbor that has the Double M Ranch. The ole boy who runs it would just like to have cows and ranch. But he grows corn for feed and beans to sell for money. He told dad one time that he should have been 700 miles west. To me he is the true description of a cowboy/rancher.

Dad has said that if he could afford to put the whole 1/4 to grass, and buy more cows, he said he would just ranch. Dad is okay with farming, but the cows are his favorite. We only have 7 head of stock cows, but we would love to have more if the checkbook would allow it.

I'll stop rambling.

Funny thing about all the so CALLED western Ranchers many of them own Combines and grow wheat and barley. To be called a Farmer does'nt bother me at all it's better than being called a LAWYER or a REALTOR.

As Jinglebob says Rancher's are in the west and Farmers in the east I have never heard of such a load of Crap maybe he needs to go for a drive once there are REAL rancher's everywhere AND plenty of FARMERS in the west who ride tractors more than many do in the east. And irrigation thats a farmer thing we don't do much here but I've seen alot in the real ranch country  .Another thing we carry feed to our cows but Ranchers cake and hay theirs where's the differance.Farmers dont care what you call them farmer rancher who cares but call a RANCHER a farmer and look out.PROFIT is what its all about no matter what the name you place upon yourself..

:agree:   Well said Denny, I consider our operation more ranch than farm but we are trying to raise better crops and be better farmers. Everything we farm is for feed but raising enough feed means that you need to pay attention to your farming practices.

I met a kid from farm country and he just loved the rangeland in western South Dakota. He had a good statement about the difference between farmers and ranchers. He said the only thing that seperated them was one wagon wheel. He said the only reason he lives where he is now is that when his ancestors came from the east they just didn't pack a spare wagon wheel. When they broke down that is where they set up shop. There is probably some truth to that statement.

have a cold one

Well Denny , we dont pack cake or hay to our cattle just salt , everything they eat they get from the ground were it grows there is nothin we bring just salt alone , raise nothin but fat cattle , good horses and wild kids . Most Arizona outfitts are the same as the one i am on here , we dont feed in the winter or plow fields or rope cattle off four wheelers matter of fact any guy that gets caught out here ridin one of them things off raod is likely to get shot , we dont irragate or milk cows , feed a corral full of pigs or nothin like that . we wake up in the mornin saddle your horse prowl your country hold up your cattle , trot home and maybe shoe a horse or feed a doggie calf go to bed and do it all over again . I kinda find it hard to call a guy that works like that a farmer . Thats why folks get mad when they get called farmer cause it dont have nothin to do with farmin .

Here in my part of Arizona....if you can't tell the difference between a farmer and a rancher.......you're not a rancher. LOL

Maybe your just didn't understand my meaning.

They are called ranchers in this country, if they have stock cows, whether they faise grain from crop land or not. those who just raise grain and don't have stock cows are called farmers. Also, ever since the CRP came in and so many farmers put all their farm ground into it and then used the money to buy up ranchland and then farm it up, caused farmers to get a bad name around here. Also those who used to jusat plant enough so some came up and then they could collect their government payment, caused people to use the word farmer AROUND THESE PARTS as a dirty word.

don't go gettin' your panty's in a wad Denny.

I never said anything except around these parts.

I know some damn good hands in Iowa and I suppose Minnesota, tho' I've never met many who live there. Several good hands came out of Minnesota and moved to this country. Only problem I see with them is they all seem to have a chip oin their shoulder because they come from Iowa or Minnesota so I guess some jerk made some stupid remark about them, so they tend to take it out on the rest of us.

My point was, it all depends on where you live and work. Kind of like the words, cowboy, cowhand, cowpoke, buckaroo, vaquero. All do about the same job and it's more a reflection of where they are and how they do a job.

Yes, there are lots of people around here who claim to be ranchers who seem to be more farmers to me. I don't care what they do or how they do it, as long as I don't have to help them or get caused any problems by them.

Funny, so many cowboys and ranchers in this 5 state area, spend the summer on tractors putting up hay and the wintewrs on tractors feeding hay, but they are cowboys or ranchers.

Maybe the best way to describe a rancher from a farmer is whether he uses a 4 wheeler tyo gather cattle or a horse.

I I mean no bad conotations with that.

Whatever anyone else wants to do and how they want to do it, is fine by me, as long as they allow me the same.

Good post azcowpuncher. It's all different isn't it.

I guess most of us try to make a living from cattle and we all go about it in different ways. No one has exclusive rights to whether their way is better than anybody elses, except in our own minds.

Yes it sure is , everyone trys to throw everyone in the same pot and things just dont work that way and they never will . Everyone has what the consider them selves and when you show up to there home range and start callin them " names " they tend to get a little peeved , so its best to just keep your mouth shut and listen to whats goin on , till you figure out what it is they do and how they do it , you just cant be some blow hard that shows up and says well this is the way we done it at such and such place , or start tellin folks how things are or how they are gonna be . I wasnt gonna get involved with this post cause this subject is a touchy situation with most folks i know as with me as well , now i dont spend my days horse back in the boulders to be called a farmer and i damn sure dont do it for the money , i do it cuase i love it and wouldnt have it any other way , no farmers do what ever it is they do and i am sure they dont wanna be called gardners or landscape artists or nursery attendants . I have never worked on a farm and when you guys go to talkin bout cuttin hay and tractors and things like that you might as well be talkin in a different language , my hay comes on a truck , my grain from a bag , my veggies from the store , but my beef comes from my back yard and thats the way i like it and thats the way it will be until the good lord says i have had enough . But if you wanna talk about native grasses and brush thats puts out the best feed , or doctorin cattle or horses or catchin wild cattle then your speakin my language and i am all ears .

What do you guys think distinguishes a farmer from a rancher?

Any ideas would be great help!

Katy

Why would/do you ask such a question?

Is seems to me that questions like that tend to divide our family -
Farmer from Rancher

When infact it's like trying to divide wheat form Flour
I tent to think we are both cut from the same bolt of cloth

Ranchrs tend to live in the West and deal in Livestock and Livestock Feeds anf Feeding- Livestock Markets and …

Farmers tend to deal with Tractors and growing and producing Food Stuffs and Food Stuff Markets

The Dictionary says

ranch·er n
1. somebody who owns or manages a ranch

farm·er n
somebody who owns or operates a farm

cow·boy n
1. a man hired to round up, drive, and tend cattle, especially in the western United States. Cowboys traditionally work on horseback, but now also use motor vehicles.
2. a male character in stories and movies about the West in the late 1800s, often shown fighting Native Americans or outlaws
3. a man who performs or competes in shows such as rodeos
4. somebody who is reckless, especially a driver or pilot

In my life time I have been all three + more -
Father, Provider, Teacher, Follower, Leader, and stll I find time for a beer now and then
Where does the "Red White N Blue" stop

Most of us are all three dependig on the time of year!
