Hockey. Violent? Nah!!!!

Simon gets 25 games; Jagr suiting up
Greetings all, Mike Casey filling in for Steve Zipay. Some big news to report:

It's official. The NHL has suspended Islanders forward Chris Simon for a minimum of 25 games for his slash to the face of Ryan Hollweg. The suspension covers the rest of this season, including playoffs.

If Simon misses fewer than 25 games between now and the end of the season, the suspension will carry over into next season.

YOU CAN WATCH VIDEO OF THE INCIDENT HERE:

So what do you think of the suspension? Too lenient? Too severe? Vote here.

My thoughts? It's entirely appropriate. What Simon did was dirty, scary, offensive and awful.

Simon's cheap shot ruined what had been a thrilling, passionate home-and-home series between two rivals fighting for their playoff lives. It shifted the focus of the casual fan from two great hockey games to one terrible incident.

The horrifying replay has been shown hundreds of times on various TV outlets. It amounts to a black eye for hockey, the kind that a struggling league cannot tolerate. The message from the league had to be clear, and it was: Fighting is part of hockey. Checking is part of hockey. Deliberately swinging your stick at someone's head? It's borderline criminal.

Simon's cheap shot on ice

Why should ice be a defense?

Ice as in: "I was on the ice when I purposely slammed the guy in the mouth with a hockey stick. So I shouldn't be prosecuted for felony assault. "

Oh, no? Well, what if you brought a gun into a hockey game and shot a player on the other team? Would that be legal too?

There is some point - some point! - where violent behavior, even in an admittedly violent game, crosses a line into criminality. The more I watch the video of Islanders bully-boy Chris Simon "clothes-lining" Ranger Ryan Hollweg at the Nassau Coliseum on Thursday night, the more I have to admit: This one just may be a crime.

That's a judgment Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice is wrestling with this weekend, as she and her assistants decide whether to seek charges against the Islanders' power-hitter.

Simon already has been suspended by the NHL. But the elements of felony assault include injury, weaponry and intent. And that hat trick seems plenty provable here. Cases have been made on a whole lot less.

I won't go along with intent. Simon was coming off a serious clock cleaning and reacted within a daze or confused state. If Simon was thinking right, 1) he knows high sticking is a no no and 2) Simon knows how to serve legal paybacks that a few stitches don't fix.

The clubbing was a bad act, but Simon was more or less quasicoherant.

Ohhh Mikey boy go up and mouth off to Chris yourself and place him under house arrest-why not clean up the cesspool that is pro football-pro baseball-pro basketball before you take on hockey which you have no clue about. Hollweg is lucky Simon is a big tough guy-any smaller player he'd of broken his neck with his cheapshot check from behind then he'd be in hot water not Simon. A better solution would of been to give Hollweg ten games too-his act was just as reprehensible.

A hit from behind is one of the least respected hits in hockey and accounts for alot serious injurys....thats what Mike isn't getting here. If anyone had a "goon" hit that night it was the hit on Simon. I didn't like the 'reaction'hit Simon gave, pretty sure hes really sorry about it too,but the hit Simon took could have injured him maybe more then the hit Simon gave. One needs to understand the game of hockey to understand that one.

Hey NR...Pittsburgs looking good huh? :D

ILrancher,if the cup holidayed in Pittsburg this year I would not be an unhappy girl :D

I watched a little Blackhawk hockey last night since for once they were on TV (Hard to watch the hawks home games as they are blacked out in Chicago and that is the station we get our games on  They should be paying to put those games on the air to generate some interest again, used to be the hardest ticket to get in town before the mid 80's bears and than then bulls won all those games..) My one thought about my mighty hawks watching the game was, god these guys are bad.. Well, that and Joe Thorton is a beast and poor Savy having to coach these bums.

The game itself really just isn't, for me at least, nearly as good on TV as it is in person.. That, and I have a question for you Hockey folks... Back when I really did follow the sport just about every rink was different sized.. I know the old Stadium had a tiny amount of ice compared to some others..Since than, a lot of stadiums have been built, are they a more standerdized size now or do they still very greatly.. It was always real interesting to see the more physical, small rink teams face the big rink more open style teams in the playoffs or any other situation that would do a home and home.. Two completely different games, kind of like baseball in the era of small fields vs the giant stadiums like riverfront or Memorial Stadium

That hit on Simon was a blown call by the reff-could of been a boarding major at least. In Midget hockey a check from behind is a 1 or 2 game suspension. As far as rink size-some of the old barns are hard to play in because the hometeam reads the boards better.

one of the biggest changes is the glass in the new rinks...It has little give unlike the old plexi glass that used to give a ton and was loud when it was hit into.....I have noticed players are getting more injuries from the glass and it should be looked at beening changed in my opinion.....Mind you when I learned to play the game it was chain link at the ends of the rink and nothing along the boards......

Hollweg not interested in prosecuting Simon

ATLANTA -- Rangers forward Ryan Hollweg, who was felled last week by a two-handed stick slash to the head by the Islanders' Chris Simon, has told Nassau County prosecutors that he will not file assault charges against Simon for the incident at Nassau Coliseum on March 8.

Hollweg, who briefly lost his hearing and suffered a gash on his jaw, said at the request of Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice's office, which is reviewing the case to determine if it will prosecute, he and two Rangers attorneys met for 30 minutes with two attorneys from the district attorney's office Thursday at the team's Westchester training center.

"They asked me if I wanted to, but I told them I didn't want to press charges," Hollweg said Friday at Phillips Arena in Atlanta. "I'm not happy about what he did, but I want to focus on making the playoffs. I just want to move on."

Simon, who apologized several days after the incident, was suspended without pay for a record 25 games by the NHL.

Rice's spokesman, Eric Phillips, said a decision on whether to proceed would probably be made Monday.

Jim Ramsay, the Rangers head athletic trainer, came off the bench to administer aid to Hollweg, who lay face down on the ice for several minutes. Simon, a 14-year NHL veteran, was given a match penalty for intent to injure and ejected from the game.

With about six minutes left in the game, Hollweg checked Simon into the boards from behind. No penalty was called. Simon got up, gripped his stick with two hands and took a full chop at Hollweg, leveling him.

District attorney spokesman Phillips confirmed the meeting with Hollweg but would not discuss details. Even if a person decides against filing a complaint, the district attorney's office has authority to prosecute, although prosecutors say they take victims' wishes into account.

Hollweg, a second-year who turns 24 next month, played in the next two games after the incident but hasn't practiced for two days because of a flu and didn't play in Friday's game.

"It's been a weird week for sure," Hollweg said.

Boy you just can't let this go can you lol. Go watch some real up and coming hooligans in the NCAA basketball deal.

I agree. It's a culture change that does none of us good.

Start cracking down on them at the higher levels and it will work it's way down.

Saw a good fist to the face in another hockey highlight this morning. You proud of him too?

Aww muffin-IF IT BOTHERS YOU TO WATCH DON"T WATCH. Do you think if I was worried about violence in hockey I'd let my nine year old girl play full contact. If your delicate southron sensibilities can't handle the greatest sport played go suck on a mint julep.Better yet 'GET A LIFE'.

Oh I was just talkin bout bluegrass music where a banjo is picked with the picks on the thumb and two fingers. I guess if you wanted too you could strum one. But it's not really a rythm instrument.

You folks is "picky".
