Howdy From The Frozen North

Welcome aboard DiamondS. You're not gonna relieve me of my self endowed title of most northerly rancher are you?

<chuckle> I'm not sure Silver. I'm up here in Nipawin, just inside the tree line. Since you secretly wanna be an Albertan, I'd say that I'm about as far north as Edmonton, maybe a bit more north. And to the east of me, I'm about even with The Pas, maybe a little south.

The coldest morning I ever remember I think it was 13 deg F. That was way too cold for this redneck. My winter normally gets in the 20's several mornings but very few days stay below 40. This week it has been cold for here. 30's in the AM then 50's and 60's in the afternoon. An under shirt and an over coat are sure needed around here this week.

Heck bama that sound's like short weather for here...

I remember one year back in the late '80's. The coldest it got all that winter was 12 degrees below zero, and that was on the 12th of October. We were getting a few late fall calves at the time, and had to bring a chilled calf into the house to warm up. So much for no troubles with fall calving.

Soapweed we had 16 inches of snow on August 20th once that was a bit much lol.

<chuckle> Its no wonder why the rest of the world thinks us Saskatchewan boys are dumb. If someone, in another part of the world, got 16 inches of snow during the middle of summer, they woulda simply moved. Packed 'er in. Left for someplace more hospitable.

But us Sask boys?

Heck Naw. We BRAG about it. And wait for more snow on Aug 19th so we have an even better story to tell.

Hmmmm, dun think I've ever been called a Southerner before. Where are you, NukTayYukTuK?

Rod

lol, well Edmonton is an 8 hr drive mostly south of here. Here being the North Peace area, straight west of about mile 80 on the alaska highway.
Sooooo... almost Tuk. :P

I'm not all that familiar with your area, but I thought that was all mountains and Canadian Shield? What the heck you feed yer cows? Rocks? Little gravel mixed in for good measure?

Naw, we got it pretty easy in my area. Maybe 4 inches or so last night. Just enough to ensure that I won't be able to find anything that was laying on the ground, until I drive over it with my tractor of course.

Edit - Correction on the 4 inches. Looks closer to 8. Had a bear of a time getting around with the four wheeler. Guess its time to break out the saddle and catch the nag.

And when they're good I give 'em a little spruce needles, just for good measure.

 I've been feeding out on pasture. Last night when I fired up the tractor to feed, all of my critters were standing in the corrals, looking hopeful. They just weren't all that impressed to watch the tractor beat it back out to the pasture with the feed again

Except my shorthorns, of course. They were all out in the middle of the pasture, heads buried in the snow, looking for that last blade of grass they'd been saving.

  I went looking for some pictures of your area, but didn't have much luck. Seriously though, you have good pasture/hay land in your area, or do you have to truck stuff in? Pardon my ignorance, but I've rarely been west of here, just south.

Yeh them shorthorns do ok in this country, If you get the right type of cow.

DiamondS, I suppose I am biased but I doubt there is a place in north america that is any better suited to cattle. Not to say that other places might not be as good, but I do believe there is none better.
It's kind of curious. if you were to drive up to here from the south on any given fall, odds are you will meet truck after truck hauling hay south, especially to BC's interior.
