Last year we had a yearling heifer calve on June 27th. She had her second calf today.

Debbie and I have been wondering if you would call her a first second calver or a second first calver?

gcreek -so you'l be selling her first calf this week?whats the plan for next year will she be one of the first to calve

Yep. All 450 lbs of her. She did double her weight over winter and mom has a normal size calf this year and lots of milk.

The mom is a calf from one of the cows we got from you.

I had a little Angus-Gelbvieh cow do that, and she was the first to calve every year without fail. If it wasn't for purebreds around here I would have used a bull off of her. Fertility is high on my priority list I guess you could say.

gcreek-wait till next year she'll have twins.i,ve had 2 sets out of 20 pb. simmental cows and 3 sets out of 130 commercial simmies this year. the pbs. and 1 commercial set are waiting for grass to grow so they can go to pasture.as a family.im waiting on the last 3 cows to calve.also will have 2 cows &2 steers at the sale this week.

What if she has twins? :???:

if she has twins next year, she'll be a second fourth calver....duh.

If she had twins next year... wouldn't she be the first and second, third calver :???: that's assuming her first born is your first and no other cow beats her before her second is born, right :???: or, if another cow calves before her second, she could be your first and third , third calver :!: if she is first and third, a ground ball could get you out of the inning.

We had something similar on this ranch. This hiefer was a Hereford, in a mostly Charolais cowherd, and calved at 15 months, then calved each year following, gaining a month on her first calf birth date. She was sold shortly, probably due to embarrassing the production rate of the Char. cows!!!

Speaking of twins.....have any of you heard about that herd in s.e. ND where there were 50 sets of twins born into a herd of 300 first calf hiefers, and they thought there might be more, as there were some yet to calve. What a mess! Those guys didn't really see twins as an unmitigated blessing, to say the least! A relative in MN told me the story, then I read it in the Green Sheet, ag paper out of Aberdeen, SD.

as far as the twins go this year they are great as the conditions were perfect for calving and the calves are good and strong . in a normal weather year they can get to be a pain.as they are usualy weaker and don't get the attention they need. my personal preference is still the standard 1 calf good and healthy /cow .
