I killed Bambi today!!!!

Help Support Ranchers.net:

We green chop about an acre daily. If we suspect rain tomorrow, we'll cut early evening tonight. We have to check for snake bits before we feed it though  Snakes are little animals too, right?
Seriously though, no animal deserves to suffer before death. Carrying a gun in the cab, for humane reasons, would go a long way to easing my conscience.
regards

Yup, it's tuff when you get one and carrying a gun is a good idea. But how is this really any different than hitting one with an automobile? Neither is intentional.

That is one of the reason's I carry a gun in my pickup. I've put a lot of suffering creatures out of their misery. Not fun, but I don't like to see anyone suffer. Even liberals, tho' I doubt I'd shoot one. I might call an ambulance, I guess.

Thank goodness we've never had this problem, the only things we tend to run outta the hay field when cuttin is coyotes, and big rats, maybe a snake or two......the day after cutting, you always see buzzards cleanin up. Which to my thinkin is a good thang, they've usually cleaned everthang up before we rake and bale.

Drought has the deer birthing late this year, every where you look there's a 12 inch tall spotted deer, they get in tall hay fields to nest up during the day so you gotta be vigilant, nothing ruins my day faster than to hit one with a swather, there's not many things living that dont deserve to die a quick humane death, except Bin Ladin..................good luck

Shelly, I did the same thing when bush hogging once. It is always a shame. I didn't have the heart to even tell the kids.

If you have so many deer maybe you need to make some money on the side by advertising hunting in the fall. Works great down here. Too many people are shying away from harvesting the does, however. We don't have the predators anymore to keep populations in check.

Everything needs a balance.

I think now and regret I didn't try keep a healthier balance with some resident skunks. We were out riding with the whole family and saw a family of them. They were so cute following their mother and it was a nice "bambi" moment with the kids. Two years later and I think everyone of them visited our house on alternating nights. Sometimes we can't keep the windows open. I got it especially bad riding the horses in tall grass and my horse was sprayed all over his chest. It was the most pungent smell of skunk I ever was involved in. I think my horse stepped on him or something. I tried working venigar on his chest and my legs for hours. I never saw the skunk at all.

At least now the dogs keep them away from the house but sometimes you just can not pet the dogs.

The vet told me someone else in the county had to put down 5 family dogs because they got in a fight with what turned out to be a rabid skunk.

Everything needs a balance or nature will do it the ugly way.

An excellent de-skunk rememdy is using Club Soda.

Yep, the carbonation in the soda will disperse the oil in the skunk spray by breaking it down with the oxygen in the bubbles.

Hydrogen peroxide will do the same thing.

It's against the law to charge for hunting access in Saskatchewan and there is no outfitting in the zone Shelley is in. sask. needs more hunting families like ours -were allowed 3-6 deer a piece depending how the draw goes and we fill all our tags. I can't see the deer populations dropping much due to bad winters-us ranchers do too good a job of feeding them. I just spent my time between a'i' jobs scouting mulkies some hog mulies out and about. Saw a pretty cool sight-a doe just dropped a fawn in front of us-couldn't get a real good pic of it though.

Here's a buck with some potential not far from your door Shelley-he might get the sharp stick come archery season lol. Deer can be a pain at times but I sure would miss them. I even eloped and had a one day honeymoon so I wouldn't miss opening day.

Tried the 'mater juice deal...worked OK. I found out about the club soda deal one day out of sure desperation!!

All 3 Aussies got 'skunked', got scared or felt guilty and ran and jumped into my truck....of course I had left the door standing wide open!!!!

So I tried EVERYTHING..and club soda was what my hand landed on first...and man it worked GREAT! So I keep a stash of the cheap Wal-mart kind on hand .

Where'd you take that picture??? It looks awful familiar. Maybe south of the pavement, south of Sloboshian's?

I apologize if I offended some of you. I'm also thinking some of you are a little paranoid about "others" reading what is posted on here. If you all want this thread to disappear, let Macon know. He can do it because I don't know how. I'm not that computer savvy.

Leave it Shelly. If there are any city slickers that give anyone a hard time about this thread, pity them for their ignorance of how the Almighty made every living thing mortal and the reminder that we are not in control of His plans.

There is nothing on this thread where people have done anything but show respect for His creatures, even in the case of an accident.

I'd not worry about it either Shelly. For those of us who have ' been there' know what happened as it's happened to us also.

Geeezzz, it's not like we go out hunting for these critters with a tractor!!!

Some people just don't understand

Leave the post Shelly, honestly it wasn't a big deal! Seems to me almost any post put on ranchers can cause some sort of a ruckus! Here in Central Alta. we have the same problam with deer as you do,I hardly know a person that hasn't hit a deer with thier vehical. And Alta. like Sask. prob all of Canada for all I know, but we can NOT take money for people hunting on our own land!Boy if we could, our land payments would be made easier  :D

I think yall need to tell your govt. to come get their livestock off your land or pay you rent for keeping them if they don't allow you to rent hunting rights. Maybe it could be called temporary land rental while carrying a rifle.

Do you think this would cause more problems than it is worth? Maybe some like the escorted hunters idea to protect their livestock.

As much as I would like the revenue from paid hunting it has kept our provinces south half from becoming a playground for rich Americans. It's pretty nice to be able to take my kids hunting for world class mulies and whitetails and not seeing land padlocked so only thje rich can hunt it. My family is big on hunting but we let guys from other provinces hunt our place for free. Besides paid hunting doesn't really control deer numbers to any extent. Up in the north half where I live and outfitting is allowed-local hunters can still hunt there also. Most of the Realtree videos you see shot up here are on Indian Reserves where game laws are moot to begin with. Several of us have been lobbying SERM to allocate more anterless tags but not having alot of luck yet.

Really,we're quite happy not having paid hunting on our land. We have the right to say no to guides, neighbors hunt on our land us on theres. We have a couple guides in our area that guide Americans, they are NOT allowed to hunt on our land, not a problam with the Americans, its the no good local born and raised guides we have a problam with.

Too many does has always been the problem in our area. No one wants to thin out the does. We now have many more deer than before the colonists they say.

The dogs keep the deer out of the garden area but I have a problem with coyotes. Usually yelling at them makes them go but last night they kept it up real close. I didn't have my spotlight charged up so I missed my chance.

Mrs. Greg and NR, I understand you hesitation with the "rich" americans. If you could trust them with a gun it might be different. I don't want all the pent up pressures of corporate america having a loaded gun on my place. Just not worth it. Hunting on your place is a little like letting someone watch your kids. You have to trust them and that comes before the money.
