Those figures are now commonly known and form the basis for a grassroots movement here in Ontario to try to change the marketing system. There is a local guy who is trying to create a better market environment by stimulating the consumers to ask for product that is locally produced.
Ontario would need to more than triple its cow herd in order to produce enough beef to feed itself. We have mega feeding capacity sitting empty here because of the poor returns. And I'm not just talking about huge feedlots - I mean small farmers who fit the "stereotypical, hayseed farmer" that the consumer wants to envision as the "right" way to produce food.
The label on the package would state the locale of the producer, rather than the country of origin.
Now THAT is intelligent labeling that actually has some meaning.
