Man it's quiet.

Those figures are now commonly known and form the basis for a grassroots movement here in Ontario to try to change the marketing system. There is a local guy who is trying to create a better market environment by stimulating the consumers to ask for product that is locally produced.

Ontario would need to more than triple its cow herd in order to produce enough beef to feed itself. We have mega feeding capacity sitting empty here because of the poor returns. And I'm not just talking about huge feedlots - I mean small farmers who fit the "stereotypical, hayseed farmer" that the consumer wants to envision as the "right" way to produce food.

The label on the package would state the locale of the producer, rather than the country of origin.

Now THAT is intelligent labeling that actually has some meaning.

BSE hit Alberta the hardest please tell me how it was any rosier in Saskatchewan?

I didn't mean prices NR I meant the rules and regs. that we had to have to go by .. Does any other province have to premise ID yet ? Most of our feed mills closed down as well . Did you hear all the time that Sask herds are infested with BSE, we still hear that regularly especially from a certain poster here.

BSE killed all cattle sales all over the country, no province was exempt from that.

I just do not know how we will survive as an industry with all the new rules they are implementing. My vet has even hinted that with the new changes coming in 2012 he will probably shut it down and he has 3 clinics. If the government sells out the dairy industry like they want to , that will be the end of most LA vets. Dairy is the only industry that uses them steadily. Most calls my vet does now are for voluntary BSE testing..They want to strip that program too.

What is the government up to now if they are voting on new changes without even letting producers see the proposed bill..

I think we are all screwed.

When BSE was confirmed did your local stores advertise that they were NOT selling Alberta beef, but Canadian beef from other provinces. Or better yet American beef. They did here. How embarrassing when your own people don't even support your industry.

That's great burnt if it's true - I hope the rest of the country catches on soon - apart from the Canadian NFU whose report Oldtimer is paraphrasing it seems very few are aware of such facts. CCA, ABP and the other provincial cattle associations still seem intent on leading us a merry dance around the bush blaming all kinds of false causes instead - expensive grain, cheap grain, BSE, Gov. regulation, stock market collapse, lack of packing capacity, under-used packing capacity, lack of packer profitability  , lack of demand for leather in the auto industry the list is endless. The only thing they don't blame is the biggest single cause - concentration in the packing and retailing sectors leading to reduced competition and increased profits for the monopoly operators.
Even hillsdown seems under the impression that BSE caused all our troubles - in fact it's impact was insignificant compared to the underlying causes. If you don't believe me read the NFU report (short version link posted) for yourselves.

GF I didn't say that BSE was the whole problem of our downfall. It sure couldn't have come at a better time. Almost like it was planned though.

But BSE sure f@cked up the dairy industry for a long time and just when prices for heifers was going back up , some ahole foreigners from the south that thought they could make a killing by buying cheap deep ped heifers hoping the border would open soon, flooded the d@m market because they had to sell. Those idiots thought that they could just buy quota and throw up a dairy barn and start milking if they had to, what a mess .WRONG that is not how it works..
