Mineral prices most likely will rise

They must have dropped over the last year, because our last custom mix was quite a bit cheaper than it was a year ago.

My dealer gave me the heads up so I ordered my usual order in time to beat the increase. Thats the nice thing about doing business with a good company FH.

The truth is. FH, is that you just gave yourself a raise. Isn't that right? :D

I received information that the cost of phos and copper, some of the most
important ingredients in mineral, is rising and will be reflected on my April
price sheet.

Just giving you all a heads up.

I wonder how much actual copper is in a bag of mineral. At around $3.40 / lb there would need to be a substantial amount to make any real difference in the cost of a bag of mineral.

Liveoak, I'd like to get a raise. Actually I have taken a deduction in pay.
We make the same off a ton of mineral at $900/ton as we did
when it was $500/a ton. So you tell me, would that be about half
as much? We can't raise our part and remain competitive.
And thats the way that works. But you won't hear me complain.
It's great to help people. Thats the real reward.

I doubt if the copper increase adds much to the price of the
mineral. But phos is another story. It's the most expensive
ingredient in mineral.

I haven't been following prices on metals, should I start taking apart the wire and old motors I have laying around? Anyone have copper ground rods? Maybe it's time to replace them with galvanized.

Prepared #2 iron is between $180 and $210 a ton unprepared is $180 where I'd sell it. Car bodies are $145 a ton no tires or fluids.I would bet copper and aluminum are high.

Well what else is new but if your mineral is $900USD a ton, then I am getting hosed royally.

I just got a quote for $1200CDN/metric tonne which makes your about $200/tonne cheaper, give or take a few bucks for exchange.

Not sure how much to lay in because I'm not sure that these girls will get to bask in in sun on our fields for another summer.

Sold our calves a couple of weeks ago for $720/head ave. before any deductins. Kinda hard to keep a cow and calf almost a year for 700 bucks. :?

Yeah when 50 hours in a welding shop will make a guy $2000 plus some extras.

I just put some fresh mineral out to the gals. (Sorry FH, it was that brand from IA that was about $5 bag cheaper.   But I promise I will buy some of the right kind soon! )

I made my own homemade lick tub with about 75% cracked corn/DDG and 25% mineral. Since the gals are now drinking fresh surface water out of the dams instead of my high sodium artesian water they are eating mineral again while they didn't hardly touch it all winter.

It's nice to have some incentive for the gals to come into the corral so I can eyeball them. Not supposed to start calving for another month but one bull got out early.

Another mineral item to think about this time of year is grass tetany. Seems it would sure be a good idea to get some magnesium in those heavy milking mama cows with green grass soon coming on.

I start adding liquid mag to the LOOMIX troughs on Valentine's Day. Just picked up another $4500 worth of mag this morning. Still cheaper than dead cows.
