Scotch Cap Angus

Them tough cows, they can live off 10 year old grass and a prayer and still raise a calf.. Okay, maybe not but that cross is awful hardy... I don't think I would raise them but I'm just stubborn enough to stay away from longhorns..

This whle threads basicly goes back to the question, what is the best of.......and you name it.

Everyone has their own opinon and is entitled to it.

As far as getting to the top and being picked on, sadly, it's all part of the game of life.

Hell, they tell me that there are people who didn't like Jesus, too.

a little Hereford makes everything better.....

if it were not for the Hereford bull, there would be no reason for the Angus cow.

I had a guy tell me the best thing for a angus cow was a hereford bull.To which I replied the best thing for a hereford cow is a Black Angus bull. The end product is what counts. But in no way a Longhorn around here that will get you docked 40 cents a lb.basically all the profit on a good year.Unless you need a couple roping steers I can't see having them and in that case leaseing some steers is by far cheaper.

I knew a guy in southern Illinois who ran them on his Angus type heifers (I don't even know what the cows were to be honest) and he actually started keeping some replacements from the breedings that he than added to his herd. They had some nice calves on them but the cows wouldn't win any personality contests.... He kept 20 or so straight longhorn cows as well to breed replacement bulls.. I thought he would have been better with a half Angus half Longhorn bull for his calving ease bull and 3/4 Angus for his replacment females but he was having lots of success.. Fed most of his own cattle.

Denny those 1/4 Longhorn calves feed up pretty nice if you retain ownership-if your selling calves though they might as well be blacks or baldies.

The experiance I seen was with some 1/4 long horn 3/4 herefords the guy took quite a beating on those not that the quality was'nt there but more due to the color and the markings.
I generally sell all of my calves as feeders.BUUUUTTTTTTT.

Those highlander cows I posted a week or so ago are now my responsibility,I leased my uncle's place cattle and all the Highlanders are for sale but there are about 30 1/2 highlander cows bred black angus that are coming with their 3rd calf I may retain ownership on those calves unless I can peddle them for a decent price. When cattle prices go in the tank I may retain ownership on some cattle but time will tell.

Denny I don't know a thing about highlanders, but don't retain ownership on them just because they will get docked at the barn.

Oh don't worry I will have those straiht bred highlanders peddled before the snow gets deep. Its the 1/2 blood cows that will have 1/4 blood calves that he is going to keep around.
