Since I'm too lazy to do the research, I'll ask here.

How does the carcass yield of one of these guys,

brahman-web-1.jpg

compare to something like this:

charolais-web-1.jpg

And before you guys ask me a bunch of technical questions, remember, I'm relatively new at the ranching game. :?

Just shooting from the lip i think the Brahma might yield a bit better everything else equal.

That said you will probably get faster growth from the Char if they are adapted to your climate.

Lots of variables.

Cross em' and get the best of both worlds. Buddy of mine raises Charbrays down here. Nice lookin cows like charolais but mean like a brahman. They can make some big headed calves though. He has some problems with pink eye though

Thanks BMR. There are lots of variables and actually, I have been doing some on-line research and while coming up with all sorts of interesting stuff to read, I'm not finding exactly what I'm looking for. :?

The Charolais here definitely grow faster than the Mestizos (which have some Brahman blood) and are heavier at maturity than the locals as well. Of course they require a bit more work on our part and a better diet too if they're going to develop properly.

The origins of my question relate to some of the crossbreeding I'm doing with the Charolais and the mestizos as I run only Charolais bulls with the mixed-blood cows. Honestly, I'm somewhat concerned about the size of the ole' gene pool for my Charolais and think some new blood may be in order as I look forward.

I'm trying to decide if I want to introduce some purer Brahman blood to those Charolais X Mestizo offspring or go with something like Senepol, which are also a decent tropical species and of Bos taurus heritage versus Bos indicus.

Way to much skin for this old girl....

You'd be amazed at the 'slick-hair' senepols...........all skin. They're really designed for warm climates.

Does the red one have EPDS? His head looks real big in that picture..
In my opinion I would use the Char... mike is the char man (not chairman) :D on here....

Carcass yield? Well, I'm hoping your asking about eatable beef yield. Unless you like eating fat hump that Charolais will produce the better of the beef by a long distance. Brahman are excellent cattle but are used mainly to cross some of their remarkable traits (beef isn't one of them) on to the offspring of other cattle.

That Senepol pic is one I grabbed off the net. :? They're really not bad looking animals.

Here's another pic:

Much better, I could live with that... but not knowing your cows... Some people can get away with things others can't....

Nothing special about my cows, the mestizos, anyway. The Charolais cows are a pretty decent group as I've had almost no problems at calving time.

The animals I'm thinking of crossing with either the Brahman or Senepol would be the female offspring of the Charolais X Mestizo crosses. And for some reason, they seem to be producing female calves by about a 2 to 1 margin right now.
