Today, the detective called and said he was headed over to interview the guys we caught that we believed tore down our gate. (see my post called CSI- west desert here on ranchtalk i posted a while back) He explained that though our case was strong, it was based on circumstancual evidence and would be hard to get a conviction without a confession. Well he called back about 2 this afternoon and said they fessed up to doing exactly what we thought. They got to the locked gate pretty tuned up thanks to copiuos amounts of Bud Light. They drank a couple more each while cussing ranchers and smoking cigs. Then they tried a .20 gauge with not much luck followed by hooking on with a wheeler that only managed to bend the gate into a banana. Then they broke the hinge bolts and threw the gate aside and went up the canyon where we caught them coming out. We had told the detective that if they felt bad after sobering up and owned up to the stupidity, we wouldn't press charges if they agreed to replace the gate. They gladly took us up on that offer and will buy a new gate of our choice and hang it. The one young man even called me tonight to apologize and make arrangements to get things moving! To me it's a great end to the story. They might of lawyered up and got off in court. Then they might of felt invincible and raised more trouble later. Or they might of got convicted and wanted to get even! This way they'll get to see how hard we work on gates and fence and maybe learn a little something. And I doubt they'll stir the pot after getting busted but knowing we didnt give them both barrels! I can name a few guys who did stupid things in their 20's while fueled by beer! Glad they owned it and happy that the Sheriff's department was such a great help. Sometimes the good guys win!!!! :D

That is great H. It is always best when remorse is involved. I have had a few incidence of these things. Once the dad of one brought him back to apologise and fix the fence. I had too redo it later but it was a good lesson. Another time a guy lost control of his BMW and wiped out my fence in front of the house going backwards. Left all sorts or BMW parts behind. I put the word out that there was enough evidence to maybe identify the car. A week later he stopped at the door and offered to pay for his trouble. I suggested that by the time his car was out of the shop he will have payed enough. He brought a Christmas gift by for a few years after, I think happy there were no police involved. The car was several thousand to fix. :-)

we have a real trouble maker in this area.12:30a.m. tears up fence at a corner. gets five 8 inch wood post. I hear the noise. He leaves the crime scene.I call police. he is all geeked up on who knows what and alcohol.I build fence till 3a.m... in rain. he calls for ambulance. He goes to E.R. to avoid jail.this was memorial day. Almost labor now and he is $10 and $20 it to death.he goes on vacation and then comes back hat in hand crying blues. cause he hadnt worked but he goes to the beach. I give him a good earfull cause i spent my vacation money on his fence problems. He has been in the paper again for criminal trespassing.so now we wait and see if anymore money comes our way. I say his type should have a court imposed vasectomy.

Glad to see cooler heads prevailed. We had a road issue here-my plow jockey neighbor had been after the municipality to upgrade a road allowance between our properties-he already had access to his land so it was more an issue of convenience than need for them. The existing trail worked fine and kept the partiers away from my pasture gates but I'd had some problems with cows getting let out. I wouldn't agree to any road building because of it-well joe farmer convinced the RM to go in and do it while we were gone to rodeo finals with Ty. I am pleased to report that somebody drove down the new road and burned doughnuts all over their crop-EXACTLY what I told them would happen-the trail runs right off a major gridroad so tempting to go party down.

people do grow up and regret things or some of us do. As the saying goes"you just cant fix stuipd" goes along way also. He is part of a 4th generation of thugs. Why I say a court imposed vasectomy would solve alot of the worlds problems.
