Today, the detective called and said he was headed over to interview the guys we caught that we believed tore down our gate. (see my post called CSI- west desert here on ranchtalk i posted a while back) He explained that though our case was strong, it was based on circumstancual evidence and would be hard to get a conviction without a confession. Well he called back about 2 this afternoon and said they fessed up to doing exactly what we thought. They got to the locked gate pretty tuned up thanks to copiuos amounts of Bud Light. They drank a couple more each while cussing ranchers and smoking cigs. Then they tried a .20 gauge with not much luck followed by hooking on with a wheeler that only managed to bend the gate into a banana. Then they broke the hinge bolts and threw the gate aside and went up the canyon where we caught them coming out. We had told the detective that if they felt bad after sobering up and owned up to the stupidity, we wouldn't press charges if they agreed to replace the gate. They gladly took us up on that offer and will buy a new gate of our choice and hang it. The one young man even called me tonight to apologize and make arrangements to get things moving! To me it's a great end to the story. They might of lawyered up and got off in court. Then they might of felt invincible and raised more trouble later. Or they might of got convicted and wanted to get even! This way they'll get to see how hard we work on gates and fence and maybe learn a little something. And I doubt they'll stir the pot after getting busted but knowing we didnt give them both barrels! I can name a few guys who did stupid things in their 20's while fueled by beer! Glad they owned it and happy that the Sheriff's department was such a great help. Sometimes the good guys win!!!!
