We have been waiting for a warm spell. Today was supposed to be -1C (just like yesterday). Only thing was it was -25C with a windchill of - 35 when we started out to get cows. Drove the trailer 5 minutes, unloaded and made a trail in 3 miles to the cows. We pushed some bush to get the cows lined out, crossed the creek and when we hit the top of the other side it was the same only the wind had changed direction. 3 more miles and the wind was really whipping and it started snowing ice pellets. Dad loaded his horse on the trailer and followed cows while I rode point to stop traffic, cover gates, turn cows, etc.
We looked all over and looking back from the far side with teh binocular check we missed 2 cows, but we can run hay over to them and trailer them home when it actually warms up.

Unfortunately no pics, as it was too cold to snap, take gloves off, answer the phone, or any other task...
Fun morning...Only down side is we found a cow that slipped her calf. I am not sure why the only problems we have seem to be when we start feeding cows. :?
How's everyone else making out this winter?

with the new annexation we are now officially 3miles east of the city. lots of times there will be 10 degree difference in the 9 or 10 miles into town.

15 degrees right now with the warm up thats supposed to give us temps in the 20's tomorrow :)
Yesterday morning it was 18 Below-- this morning it was 0-- but the 25-30 mph East winds had it feeling like it was 20 below....Plumb nasty- and the ground drifting blew everything in and made the roads terrible again..We will try to dig out for the umpteenth time tomorrow...

We are officially over 5 foot of snow for the winter now... :(

Weather boys are predicting about a week of 20's/near 30's-- but 2-4" of snow about every other day with the warmer Pacific coastal moist air coming in...

Accuweather still has a nasty forecast for the rest of the winter:

Maybe they should have listened to the global warming naysayers.

They figure that in Europe, if they had listened to those predicting the cold winter, they would have saved lives by preparing, but they silenced the forecasts, due to the global warming myth.

We got down to minus 35 and with windchill we were minus 46 last night, today it was no nicer. Not a nice night or day for calving, good thing all the cows thought the same thing.Just got in from checking the girls and it is beautiful out now,no wind and it is minus 12.They are saying long range forecast is going to be above normal temperature for the next 2 weeks, which is a good thing because i got a lot of cows very close to calving.

-12 degees far here this moring all water tanks open fall calvers eating me out of house and home put two cornstalk bales out for bedding . cut the bulls last saturday so trying to keep them warm till they get healed up

Oldtimer, you must have some pretty big equipment to dig your way out of that much snow. what a challenge.

You just have to open things up wide the first time-- and then keep clearing it back and stacking it higher when you get more....We just finished digging out stacks and the yard for what seems like the 100th time....Beautiful day- 33 degree and no wind....

But they are predicting more snow tonight- and snowing/blowing tomorrow :(

I talked with a ranch manager yesterday that says he has been having to use his D-8 Cat to keep his road open wide enough for a vehicle to go thru- and that the drifts are taller than his house.... A friend up by the border was looking for big Cat/or loader so they could move about 300 cows to a pasture closer to home to make them easier to feed...
Several of the folks living north of me toward the border have rotary snow blowers they can mount on their big 4X4 tractors....

I'm sure this winter will convince a few more folks to get out of the cow/calf game and go straight to running yearlings...I already know of two that have dispersed their cows for that reason...

Selling your cows and running yearlings is fun till you get a bunch of sick calves in this weather. Really no sector of the cattle business is all play and no work. I imagine those guys fresh in the yearling business are feeling the a.. pucker a bit buying calves to run on grass. I guess you could just take in yearlings and custom graze them too but that has a few hitches to it also.
