Mountain lion attacks man
By The Associated Press Monday, March 03, 2008

RAPID CITY -- A Rapid City man says he was attacked by a mountain lion.

Ryan Hughes says he was ice fishing Saturday at Sheridan Lake, and a lion jumped him as he left the ice and stepped into the woods.

Hughes says the lion had a fresh kill in its mouth.

Before he could react, Hughes says the big cat jumped on top of him, knocking him on his back.

Hughes says he put his hands in front of his face and started kicking wildly.

The lion retreated, but it left the man with deep gashes on his arm, and scratches and punctures on his face.

Hughes says he reported the attack to the Game, Fish & Parks Department.

If im tony, your Hillary!!!

Why do you think the thing attacked Passin.......It had a kill in its mouth...think it wanted more? Maybe it was hurt?

Do you honestly think the think would have a kill in its mouth and stalk the fisherman at the same time?

I do hope they find and kill the thing so everyone isnt afraid to walk in the damn woods!

There we go again it is ok for a lefty to make a slam but someone else says anything and all heqq breaks loose. If people on this board do not know by know that when I say something it is in jest, then they are like the person who interupts a conversation you are having and think they know what you are talking about.
Peoplw who bully their way into a conversation are pathetic.

Mountain lion spotted near EROS Data Center
JONNIE TATÉ FINN • MELANIE BRANDERT • MARCH 5, 2008

Workers at EROS Data Center fear the landscaping has become hunting ground for one of South Dakota's largest predators

Mountain lion sightings have been reported on the company's property near Garretson, company officials said Tuesday. The first sighting was reported early last fall, and in past weeks the animal was spotted again on consecutive weekends, said Christ Doescher, acting special assistant to the EROS director.

The Sioux Falls office of the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks Wildlife Division confirmed it is working with EROS though they haven't confirmed a mountain lion is in the area, said conservation officer Shawn Wichmann. EROS reported the sighting Feb. 25 and e-mailed a photo of the animal's tracks, but by the time wildlife officials checked out the area snow had covered the tracks.

"We looked at those tracks in the photo, and it was hard to tell whether they came from a dog or a mountain lion," Wichmann said.

Days after a Rapid City man said he was attacked by a mountain lion at Sheridan Lake in the Black Hills, EROS employees aren't as concerned about a potential mountain lion given that deer and coyotes often roam the area.

Jo Wahle, a software engineer for EROS contractor Science Applications International Corp., dismissed the warning to employees until she saw a second e-mail.

Wahle said she'll keep her eyes open when she walks between her car and the building.

"People take it as part of life in South Dakota, and part of working at a facility surrounded by countryside and farm fields," she said.

Reach reporters Jonnie Taté Finn at 331-2320 and Melanie Brandert at 977-3926. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Here's the email that was sent out to the EROS employees. It came from an employee at EROS who was angered that no one let the people around Sioux Falls know of the threat. He wondered if government employees are considered more important than other people? :???:

Sent from the Office of the Director:

Over the last few months various individuals have
spotted a suspected mountain lion on the EROS
property. Security has not been able to capture any
pictures of the animal in question, however, we do
have pictures of the paw prints. These paw prints,
although not completely definitive, lead the South
Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (SD GF&P) to believe that
the animal in question is a mountain lion.

Due to this fact, we wanted to alert all government
and contract employees and encourage individuals to
notify security of any reported sightings. We are
currently working with the South Dakota Game, Fish and
Parks to confirm the presence of the animal and if it
continues to use the EROS property as part of its
range, we may be forced to remove it from the EROS
area.

As spring arrives, please be conscience of this and
try to walk in pairs as you take your breaks outside.

If you could comprehend what your reading, you would see the gfp didnt send it out. it was sent from eros to its employees. It also says its not for certain its a lion. With all the security at eros, dont ya think there woudl be a good chance it would be on a camera?

Im not saying its not there. THere is the chance. The chance is slim.

How many is too many for you LB??? 1??

im not gonna change my habits cuz of the possibility of a mountain lion in the area.

Any mountain lion near my grandkids or my livestock is one too many. But you go right ahead and cohabit with them if you want. They're just big kitties, aren't they?

Who knows, if you wind up having to have the constructive surgery these people had after their encounters with mountain lions, you might even be better looking! 8)

Oh, and did you notice that none of these folks saw the lion first? They should have been aware that there was the possibility of a mountain lion in the area, right?

One walked across the road right in front of a car on our road coming into the ranch around three years ago. The next day it was spotted approx. 11 miles south of here right across the road in front of a car. We have changed how we look at things. The kids used to play out back in the trees and none of us thought a thing about it........now an adult goes. I'm not willing to take the chance another one will never be around when it comes to my children.

Last year a ranch with in 10 miles of us found a calf dead and said it had to be a lion kill. Plus the other heifers in the lot were scared to death and just didn't recover from whatever went on in the lot for the rest of the year. Did anyone see one? No. Did the evidence lead to the probability of a lion yep. Is it worth taking chances it wasn't..........Not when it's that close to my house.

Are we scared? I wouldn't say scared it's just being responsible as if one was here more then we all see.
