I helped a compnay AI 150 cows yesterday. These were repurchaced cows for a new cattle owner. While putting these cows through the chute noticed several left rib brands. Branded cattle arre very rare here and a left rib brand is almost never seen. The brands were different as these cows had been sold and sorted more than twice.

I think some of these cattle came down here from the western drought. These people purchased black cows with some BWF.
They are Hot Iron Brands.

Well, I don't have a brand at all :shock: . Have just been using ear tags since the herd was so small. However, given the importance of branding and how fire branding is somewhat of an art, I was wondering if any of you experts out there have a preference between fire branding and freeze branding. Is one any easier than the other, or more reliable?

Some states (Montana I know for sure) don't recognize freeze brands as a proof of ownership.... Only hot iron brands...

The Farms Brand. Registered left hip or shoulder in LA on horses and cattle.

Top one is my personal brand. Registered left hip or shoulder on dogs, horses, and cattle. Bottom is my late fathers brand that he had since he was 16. he would be 66 right now so ive kept it since he passed. His is registered right shoulder on dogs, horses, and cattle in LA.

The P-Z is the hubby's brand. The -KT was his grandfathers and is now our sons. The Lazy T K quarter circle was my FIL and is now our daughters.

With the hot iron brand you can see from the inside of the hide whether its been altered later and can also age a brand which I've been told is not possible with the freeze brand....

Montana allows them to be recognized as a "marking" on a horse for identification...

The second one we acquired this summer, saw it for sale on craigslist, after a bit of research, we bought it. Turns out it is my great grandfathers brand when we ranched out here.

Ok question....why is it called a "Wyoming slash", why not just slash?

NOt really sure, that is just what the brand office told us it was. My guess is because it faces backwards instead of a forward facing slash. Maybe someone else might know more about it then me.

L/3 I saw that brand on craiglist either this spring or summer and I even inquired about it because he did not have it listed very well at first. I decided against it after I learned it had a bar over the top, but I also didn't have a family connection to it.

My eldest son's brand is this one inverted to make a "17" on the right hip.

Also TTB, how is your turkey track made? Some have a heel, and some are diconnected at the base.

That's pretty much it. Reverse C, connected K, Quarter Circle. It use to be my grandpa Kidder's brand.


I use to know of a few funny brands but the only one I can remember is R U lazy 2.
