I have friends who have used Ohlde's cattle and they actually like the Echelons better than Emblazon.
Be sure to check out this bulls feet. That and fertility are the holes in 6807, or so I hear.
I doubt if you get him for bought for $4000 anyway. The footnote says he is a sale feature, does it not?
I came across this in the Montana Stockgrower Cattle Directory. I thought it had a lot of merit.
Have you been duped?
Promoters of EPDs as a useful tool in selecting cattle may have ruined your herd. EPD's have produced cattle whose genes demand more resources than your environment can provide. With every purchase of a bull that promised to bring you "explosive growth", if you kept his daughters, you have reduced the biological fitness of your herd. Modern beef cattle are too tall, too narrow, too lean. Animal selection using EPD's only identifies individuals who excel in an ideal environment. Introducing seed stock that is genetically 'better', but which requires irrigated pastures to thrive, is not a good choice for a rancher on short grass prairie.
Since time began, nature has selected for biological fitness. Animals adapted to their environment by natural selection are limited phenotypically by the resources of their environment. That is why all deer look alike. Natural selection shies away from extremes. If your cows are biologically adapted to your environment, their phenotype is an expression of their balanced endocrine system which is critical to their ability to withstand the stress of a grass-based environment. Well-adapted cows are long-lived easy-keepers. If you intorduce a bull to increase production, the genetic need to support growth will untilize the resources that previously were used to maximize fitness. The cows will suffer.
I absolutely believe this. So I have tried to find seedstock that was selected before the days of promotion. In reaching back to the earliest bulls imported to create the Wye herd I believe I have found blood that was fashioned over many generations by conservative cattlemen. I have sought out bulls free of genetic defects, bulls known for the longevity of their daughters. Presently I am using sons of Prince of Malpas, Lodge of Wye and Viking GD60. I am happy to have daughters of Viking, Emulation 31, F0203 and Fabron of Wye in my herd. I can't live long enough to concentrate this blood. But I can enjoy what I believe to be the right decisions, by exclusively trying to improve maternal function.
