I am thinking to have our 50 replacement type hiefers palpated, preg checked, pelvic sized, check for freemartins etc. Is this a worth while venture? We plan to market them in the end of March. Is this of interest to you guys that buy new to you hiefers? Or is it just as well to sell them as?

We are buying 6oo# replacement type hiefers and are feeding them alfalfa and mostly orchard grass hay. Also have some oats. Should they be fed whole or lightlty rolled or not required atall. Any experiences or comments would be welcomed.

No bloat problems yet. We have always fed grassy hay other years, but this year we sprayed out our grass and have 50/50 alfalfa/grass to feed. We feed it in big rounds in bale feeders and when we put in new bales they stand and eat for quite awhile. I'm a little leary of them filling up on too...

We put up about 10,000 small squares of hay. Use a disk bine to cut, an inverter the flip curing hay over on to dry ground, A Hesston small square baler and a New Holland pull type bale wagon to pile(104 bales). All this is done by myself over two cuts. Wife helps put tarps on top of the stack...

will they eat wheat straw as good as barley straw?

We have some 650# replacement hiefers. We have some rained on 3rd cut grass/alfalfa not good enough to sell, so my plan is to feed it to these calves. I realize its pretty rich, so want to water it down with straw. We have our own wheat straw, but would we be better feeding barley straw? Or not...
