    Palpating Hiefers??

We have sold our hiefers to the same guy for three years. Last year he had a few freemartins and well as some open ones when he sold them in the fall. None of the free martins were necessarily from the ones he bought from us. Anyway he says this year he would like to check for freemartins...

    Palpating Hiefers??

I am thinking to have our 50 replacement type hiefers palpated, preg checked, pelvic sized, check for freemartins etc. Is this a worth while venture? We plan to market them in the end of March. Is this of interest to you guys that buy new to you hiefers? Or is it just as well to sell them as?

    input on NH balers

on the 688 check on the left side front where the left belt wears against the wide flat bar that holds the front roller. ( the roller in the front down low left side) About 10,000 bales you will probaly need to open the baler and take the tension off the belts and weld up the grouve. A easy fix...

    Feeding replacement hiefers

We bought some Red Angus/Semi cross replacement type hiefers weighing average of 600#. We are feeding 1St. cut grass/alfalfa hay in round bale feeders. Also a lick tub. of mineral-protien. Other years we have fed about 4# whole oats. This year we have barley of our own. Plan to roll some and...

    say Per, about hay presevative...

OK We are just east of Lethbridge. When we have had hay that was not curring I have an inverter the picks up the hay and behind the pickup teeth is a big plastic fin that flips the swath upside down on dry ground. It works very good. Just had to learn how to operate it properly. It took 2-3...

    say Per, about hay presevative...

I have an applicater for dry preservative. I have never used it, but knew a guy by Calgary that used it most times. He used a product call haymate. It is a Gandy applicater. It mounts above the pickup and blows the powder on to the hay as it is being feed into the baler pickup. If you are...

    sold replacements

A few weeks back I posted about a fella wanting to buy his hiefers that we bought last fall at an auction from him, back when spring came , but now he wants to pick them because he thinks there may be twins in the bunch (thinking freemartins) Told him I had another guy who would take all and...

    selling replacements

Last fall we bought some hiefers to feed over the winter and sell in the spring, hopfully to the replacement market. Before I had them paid for the seller came up and thanked me for buying them and to see him in the spring as he might be interested to buy them back. Now it's nearing the time to...

    bloat blocks

No bloat problems yet. We have always fed grassy hay other years, but this year we sprayed out our grass and have 50/50 alfalfa/grass to feed. We feed it in big rounds in bale feeders and when we put in new bales they stand and eat for quite awhile. I'm a little leary of them filling up on too...

    Haying solutions

We put up about 10,000 small squares of hay. Use a disk bine to cut, an inverter the flip curing hay over on to dry ground, A Hesston small square baler and a New Holland pull type bale wagon to pile(104 bales). All this is done by myself over two cuts. Wife helps put tarps on top of the stack...

    Feeding straw ?

We have some 650# replacement hiefers. We have some rained on 3rd cut grass/alfalfa not good enough to sell, so my plan is to feed it to these calves. I realize its pretty rich, so want to water it down with straw. We have our own wheat straw, but would we be better feeding barley straw? Or not...

    Feeding replacements

We usually buy hiefers to background and sell in the spring for replacements. Have been feeding alfalfa/grass hay and a little barley to get 1.5- 1.7 # gain. This year with the price of hay being higher, I'm thinking of buying oats and feeding 5#'s either lightly rolled or whole to supliment the...

    Hay cutters

we used to have a NH 499- not a thing wrong with them, but bought a Hesston 1340 discbine for less than we got for the 499. ( both 12' cut)Both are good machines, but the discbine is much faster. Where I had to slow down in heavy damp hay with the 499 to about 2 mph, I can blow through with the...
