Oklahoma rancher dragged to death by calving cow

I'll bet he had pulled calves that way before with out a thought of what could happen.

Letter to Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska

Great letter, I feel the same way about voting and what happens when the chips are down in Washington.

    Branding Etiquette

I usually cut at the brandings I go to along with a little roping. I try to let all the ropers rope at my brandings, I'll rope a little if I have a new horse that hasn't been roped on much so he'll be ready to use at others brandings.

    Bred Heifers

The shortage of feed will hold things down for a while. Its hard to pay 200$ a ton for hay and make those high price heifers work. My open heifers brought more than some of the bred ones. I took home a check for just over $ 1240 a head for my opens a couple of weeks ago.

    Still Green here...

I'm only 90 miles south of you and I had about a 25% hay crop. I went by some spring wheat today that is about 10" tall and fully headed and too thin to cut.

    Bred Calves

I had it happen once. The calf had to have been less than 5 months old. I start calving in April and this one calved the end of April.

    Replacement Heifers

Next time I see Butch I'm going to ask him about the bull. I like the Woodhill Foresight son I got from Wittkopp's

    Replacement Heifers

The top seller being out of Sydgen C C & 7 explains the EPD's. I was going to come up to the sale to look at a couple of the sons of Connealy Lead On but I had a conflict. I'm done buying bulls for this year unless I have one that doesn't test OK.

    New Bulls were delivered

They are bigger than they look in the pictures. They are weighing 1200 or a little better. My corrals are built taller than most because they were built for horses too. I'm glad I got these bulls bought in February because the way they are selling now this quality of bulls could easily cost...

    dang cow

Had heifer pick a patch of ice about 10' across surrounded by water to calve on yesterday, calf was dead when I found it. Got plenty of dry bare ground for them to calve on. She's not going to get a second chance.

    Five gallon cattle

I've been doing that for years, really helps when calving heifers if they aren't afraid of you being on foot around them in the calving pens. I'd rather have them come to me than run away from me.

    Vigertone

I usually get 3 ton at a time delivered. The mice and coons can get into the shed where I store mine but they have never bothered it. My dealer brings it on the little ten bag pallets and wheels them off his trailer into my shed with his cart.

What is your stocking rate per acre?

40 to 60 acres per AU here for year round grazing. This year my winter grazing is under about a foot of hard crusted snow.

    Open 1st Calf Heifers

I agree too. I breed my heifers for 30 days, have about 15% open, this year was better. By the harsh culling I am working toward a more fertile cow herd that will breed up in 45 days and have a more uniform calf crop. I just keep a few more heifers to make up for increased opens. Dollars out...

    RFID Tags

I agree High Plains, I use the RFID tags to be program compliant on Age/Source and NHTC programs. I'm not going to get rich on the deal but there's enough in it for me that its well worth it to do it.
