    Done feeding cows

I agree, i wish there was an easy mechanized way of removing twine. This is on the menu for tomorrow. We have a bunch done, but got 600 to do tomorrow. That's a full a for a couple of guys.

    Calving ease vs. birth weight

The old timers here say a cold winter = bigger calves. :agree:

    Calf prices

Nortexsook, efb, and Redbarn statements are all different in direction and true. Going broke and getting rich are at extreme apposing ends of the idea of making money . When the pigs waddle in at both ends of the market - look out.

    Calf prices

Red Barn Angus - your dad is/was right. Great advise. Maybe its about dollar cost averaging or average selling price - in stock broker terms of buying frequently (in this case selling) when there is a profit and taking it and keeping going rather than all sold or none sold. hmmm. Thank you.

    Calf prices

I am reading the posts and am a rookie at the cattle business. This maybe one of those times I get taught a lesson versus learning one, but I think the higher the price of corn/barley and Oil/Diesel/Gas and the more flex acres that are broke and put into annual crop production - the better for...

    Cows @ Salt

isn't it like us at restaurants. The food is salty or salted so we drink "water" and the more "water" we drink the more food we can pack in a given space. The more food we can pack into a given space the greater the gain. (restaurants want to sell you dessert, thats why they never let your water...

    Cattle dogs

I recently saw an amazing display of what a dog can do. How many ranches use working dogs as part of their cattle handling? What breed and where did you get your dog(s)? Male or female - fully trained or started or as a pup? Thank you :)

    ATV Calf Cages

Does anyone use these when cows are calving on pasture to treat newborns while momma watches safely? Actually, its not the safety of the cow I am worried about, but it should reduce some stress for all. Any recommendations on manufacturer or did you build you own? Thanks :)

    Just Ramblings.....

Just made a recent observation about the cattle business. I never fully appreciated (or understood) the differences in how cows are worked and operations are managed until recently. I kinda put all operations in one pot never appreciating that some operations do the same thing and learn the same...

Training cattle to act as a herd

This is a very interesting read. Its funny, how much there is to learn about the cattle business and recently i've discovered - "I don't know - what it is that I don't know" It's a little late for new years resolutions, but I am going to watch, i mean observe cattle & their behavior more in...

    Herd expansion 2011?

Somewhat unclear at this point. I am doing an overhaul at ranch. We are increasing grazing intensity, going to try and reduce the haying and grain fed. I think cow numbers will stay the same, but keep all calves over winter for grass following year and will start to graze some sheep as test.

    Herd expansion 2011?

Good luck with the Dr. - Northern Rancher. I hope the news is good.

Beef supply/ demand and other questions.

It seems everywhere I look I see information about the size of the N.A. cow "numbers" and its low level and continued decline. Its great to see the impact of these news headlines on prices, but I wonder if this is the whole story. Is cow numbers the best predictor of pounds of beef supply...

    Open 1st Calf Heifers

Just a thought for your consideration, your heavy culling of opens while painful is advancing your herd very fast under your management plan. Another way to say this is, you pick your management plan first and then the girls that bring home a good calf within your access to resources or plan -...

    Bred Heifer Prices

 I have put the word out that I have 70 black angus bred heifers for sale and they are almost gone by word of mouth at $1100 for gate run. I am a little surprised and unclear where this market is headed, i guess no shocker there.

    Cow Calf business

I funding it perplexing, that as the price of corn/barley goes up the price of calves go down and as well as the prices of grains go up we can generate more value from our grass by putting pounds on grassers than by cows eating that grass and producing calves. That is, it seems to me that grass...

    Measuring cow performance?

If I am to judge a cows performance, is it good to use calf weight as a percent of cows weight? What is a great %, good %, average % and poor %? Are the %'s relevant at 205 days since birth or since the start of calving?
