Felt hats

The best hat I have owned in the last five years is a Resistol Black Gold. It seems to fit better than anything, and is real easy to clean.
 
An old rancher I used to work for told me to never hire a guy who wears a straw hat or smokes roll your owns because they are either chasing their hat or rolling a smoke :wink: :cboy:


I got my last 2 hats from Oklahoma Hatters. I found them on Ebay. the hats are 20x but cost about the same as 4x resistols. they wear like iron as the first one I got from them is going on three years as my work hat.
 
mtn_90. I own Star of the West and would like too thankyou for you order. If you have any problems with the hat please let me know. I wanted to respond to why I don't wear a hat at work. I wear my hat too and from work but not at the store because I am constantly taking it on and off to shape the hats I'm building. Feel free to take a look aat the hanger in my work area and you will find the hat I wear. Thanks again for you suport MTN_90 and Spinner.

I bought a Stetson felt hat in 1963 at Miller Stockman in Denver when I was there to compete in the college livestock judging. I wore that hat a lot although it never did fit real well ( was a little too large). It has held up well, and when my son was home for Christmas he wanted it so I passed it down to him. He put a new hat band on it and is now wearing it. So that one is 43 years old and still going, somewhere in Arizona.

Old hats never die, they just loose their youthful shape. :lol:
 
got a good 25 year old silver belly 5x resistol.
Dad got a hand made hat of my grandfathers that was made in SLC, I'd like to take it to the hatter in Jackson hole and get it clean back up....
My wife and I each have an Akubra , from Austrailia, the use rabbit fur for thier felt , they have been damn good felt hats....espesialy fot the quality and the price

The lesser half just dropped his good hat down to work hat around Christmas after I got him one from Oklahoma Hatters. He thinks it's probably one of the nicest hats he's ever had.
 
How many of you in the southwest wear a felt all year? I switch to a palm leaf straw about april but have to rig a stampede string for any serious ridin, I wear a hat all year and its just too d#$n hot down here in Texas in the summer for felt.. for me anyway.

I've been getting mine from Mackey Hatters of Shell, Wyoming (formerly Bozeman Mt.) ....

They run about $160-170 for the 10X's
around $200 for 50X
and $300 for the 100X

But they are nice looking hats and wear good.....

Lot different then when you could buy an American 20- 20X hat for $20.......

The old timers always say you go to straw when the mesquites leaf out.

I stopped in to Leddy's in Ft. Worth during the stock show. Saw some with a $1,000 price on them. :shock: I think they were for the "all hat , no cattle' gents.
 
We went into ML Leddy's in San Angelo on our trip out there a few weeks ago, and believe it or not, there wasn't but one small wall in the back of the store with boots on it, no hats in sight, and a whole bunch of furniture and dishes for sale. Looked more like a furniture store than it did a boot shop.
 
This is proably going to be a dumb question, but how can a custom made 100x would be cheaper than a manufactured hat. I believe that paid around $400 for a Resistol Black Gold (20X), and if I read correctly you can buy a 100X custom hat for 100 cheaper.

Thats one of the reasons I went with a smaller custom hatter-- some of these major manufacturers are just selling a name....
