Holden Herefords

Larrry I understand what you mean. Just this year I have already helped one calf nurse. No cage, no head catch just a pitchfork of hay and a pan of ground barley. Was I expecting a kick? yep. Was I kicked? Nope.

I have been kicked and injuried more times by my milk cows then I ever have been by our Herefords. The crazies do not stay around here. I love loading those on the trailer and watching the tail lights disappear over the hill.

If we have to help a calf suck, that cow gets loaded on a trailer and taken to town. I don't get to watch the tail lights disappear over the hill because I am driving the pickup pulling the trailer. :-)

I did enough "helping a calf nurse" when I was a kid to not want those kind of cattle on the place.

I have'nt been rolled by a cow in 15 years and the last one that did was a black baldy. She must have been having an idenity crisis.

no calf cages here, we like our Herfords.... black hide bias at the sale barn is just fine with me... I think having the kids help with the cattle is a GREAT way for them to grow up, so we keep the Herefords to be sure that we dont injure the kids..... family over money is my opinion.

That cage is crazy!

I tagged 9 today in the cornfield! just keep the calf between you and the cow...

My black cows love to get going when a calf bawls.... I love the rush

Be careful jigs, you might get called a sorry cattleman

So I should ship this cow because her calf had gotten chilled and needed a little help getting latched on the teat?

Don't think so. That cow stood there stock still even when I grabbed that teat and popped it in that calf's mouth. Got to sucking and is doing great.

I don't have a CDL so I watch the tail lights and throw the calves we kept back a bunk full of hay.

After having owned just about every colour and crossbred over the years we have found "bad" disposition comes in every creed. I personally prefer a cow that is a little overly protective of her calf than otherwise. There is a far greater % of these cows that bring home a calf from our predator infested range than those that calmly chew their cud while you process a baby calf.

I know the "active" ones sure have made me study cow phsycology to a higher degree. Handling cattle that will move off me with little pressure is much more enjoyable than those that close their eyes and walk over me.

We also found that the majority of the cows we had during our hands on, barn calving days didn't stay long when we moved to calving later and under the trees. Culling heifer calves that got more attention than an eartag has made a difference in this approach.

While we don't own a cage as it would be a detriment in the timber, I do know that a lot of our cows would iron me out if I left the bike seat while tagging. Some of them haven't even had that respect until a short training session.

Oh, I also prefer my bulls to never get comfortable enough with humans to get in pitchfork range.

Any animal can step on ya accidentally
Accidentally is the key word
I hate painting any breed with a broad brush
you just did "If you think angus are crazy, try Chi's or tarantaise."
And we used to calve a herd of mixed cows for a doctor and named a nice little hereford cow "kamikazi" when she calved.
And you kept the cow????
You'd better sell all your animals then regardless of color
Now which is it, you said there is a difference as per your "Chi and tarentaise" comment
If you think angus are crazy
but Chi and tarentaise are worse, OK maybe Chi's would be ok if we found some worse than the Chi's

Herford breeder who defends his choice=BAD
Black haired breeder who defends his choice=GOOD

See I made it easy for ya in defining cattle

I think its time you all let it die!!! Admit it, we all have our favorites, and we all feel the need to defend them. Attitudes are as much a product of how the critter is handled as anything. I can attest that I have been mauled by just about every breed, I think they can sense it in me, that I need mashed into the ground. Even been thumped by an old mare that I am the only one she ever took a swipe at.
I think we have all had some critters with bad attitudes, and sometimes we have had to keep them longer then we wanted to, for several different reasons, but this thread is just getting to the point of totally non-productive!!!

Larrry is right. there is a double standard in this argument.... it is ok to generalize the Hereford breed with a wide brush, but to generalize the Angus breed is wrong..... I don't see many pics of the Herefords with that cage contraption.

Soap seems to be able to point out what others should do in managing thier operations, yet has a little trouble when they offer back opinons on his that are less than flattering.....

probably has to due with knowing his spread was once a Hereford operation before he took on the wild black cattle.

It was just a debate until we had one poster that decided he wanted to call names and challenge a guys livestock abilities.

Well said jigs I don't want those guys to change their operation, but just offer us the respect and not call us names for our choices and accepting what works for us.

As cattlemen running all breeds of cattle, we need to bury the hatchet, and as Spike Van Cleve so aptly stated: "Let sleeping, by God, dogs lie."

If we desire a good old fashioned fight, we as Republican cattlepeople need to just get back to doing our best to defeat Obama next fall. :-)

Larry you are one of the most mouth son of a guns on this site! You run down ANYONE and EVERYONE in political bull and made it so i won't even post or visit there. You are a know-it-all in my humble opinion and it's about damn time somebody called you on it. You are a sorry cattleman to make the statement you did. A pink or green or black cow can thump ya. So can a Hereford. Or a limo or a chianina. I have the life experiences to prove it. But i sure know enough about cows to not be scared to run a cow because of color. You are a blow hard and love to stir the pot and get all butt hurt when i call you on it. Sorry your feeling got hurt. Now maybe you can see how all your own mean spirited if not outright hateful comments make somebody with a different political veiw feel. Grow up would ya. And run whatever color of cow doesn't make ya pee yourself when ya get too close! LazyWP is right. I've spoke my piece and i will let it die.

Exactly soap, we are all in the business of producing beef and it would be an awful boring place if we all did it the same. I enjoy seeing other peoples ways of doing things. We are all learning until the day we cash it in.

The only thing I had a problem with is being called a sorry cattleman. I thought he would have it in his heart to say he was wrong in calling names. Guess I was wrong about this guy joining together for the betterment of beef production. At this point I don't want his apology, it would be meaningless

I will apologize when you start treating folks like human beings who vote different than you. :D Sorry Larry, if i was out'a line. Not sure if you realize you have a gift for saying things that might tick others off a tad. I shouldn't of called you anything as my only connection to you is through a website. I have never witnessed you in action as a cattleman and only have my opinion of you from your WORDS here. Run cows however you'd like and good luck to you doing it.
