    Why do you buy cake?

I've got 2nd cutting alfalfa orchard grass for sale. No rain on any hay this year unfortunately. I've sold about 2,000 bales so far but have a little left.

    Why do you buy cake?

I knew if I looked hard enough I could find this.

    Range cubes

I had this debate with Soapweed years ago, I asked why all the Sandhills ranchers fed cake when you could buy three tons the alfalfa for the price of a ton of cake. If I remember correctly he said something about convenience and tradition. I agree totally with Faster horses but then again I...

HORSEBACK ON LOTS OF HILLS By Steve Moreland, May 6, 2017

You forgot me! I fed your bull calves at least one year. What a great story Steve, I especially enjoyed ones when you were young and proving yourself to your Dad. I know he was proud of the rancher you have become. He talked about you every time we used to visit. That's one of the reasons I...

    Been away a long time

I think about Northern Rancher all the time. I never met him but considered him a friend. We talked about getting together the last year he was alive. If I had to do it over again I would have made a point to drive to Canada to meet him. It's weird how you can "meet" somebody online that you...

    Sometimes sorrow brings inspiration

I know what you are going through H, in a 6 month period last year I lost both my parents, my mother in law and my closest Aunt and Uncle. God bless you and all your family in the time of sorrow.

    Bale grazing

We had at least 30 bushels on the ground on a pivot several years ago after a bad October wind storm. I fenced it into fourths with a hot wire and gave 400 head no more than 2 hours access to the corn. We gave them about a half feed of hay each morning before they went to the corn. Each...

Do most ranchers still brand their cattle or only use ear tags?

I'm wondering how you could get Longhorns in a chute in the first place. Like the other guys said, sell those and get some good cattle, ones that will fit in a chute so you can brand them.

I noticed that a while back too Soap.

    Spring branding

I help at least 15 friends and neighbors brand every spring. I love the chance to visit, work, joke around and enjoy a beverage or two with all the guys. The only branding I don't enjoy so much is my own, too much to worry about, but somehow we always manage to get it done.

    Leasing a Morton building ?

A friend of mine just priced a Morton vs. a General Store built building and the Morton was almost twice the price. I'd give Dave a call before you get too far into your planning.

    Early December 2014

We built some like that years ago and the cattle were pretty hard on them from rubbing. We took old irrigation pipe and attached that to the "valley" of the steel as a bumper to help reinforce the windbreak. Since that time the shelter belt has grown up enough so we took the windbreak down...

    Oregon vs Ohio State

The two teams I was cheering for. That hardly ever happens.
