A few random thoughts on the topics at hand

So what do you all do for depression...This subject has been discussed around coffee cups for generations it's not new. Each generation had it's own struggles and each lived thru it. If things are that bad why not just quit. If your loseing money every day why not get a job at Mc Donalds at least that shows a small profit every week.

Well Denny there was a time when I would have spoken just as you have, but sooner or later one discovers that there are things in life that are way bigger than I am or anything that I have ever imagined.

They can turn our comfortable little worlds right upside down. So until that happens, we can talk like we are the biggest, toughest, smartest guy ever.

It appears that you still have to learn that. So don't put your resume too far away.

Soapweed is entirely right! Advertisements, doctors, health and fitness professionals, you name it they support a healthier lifestyle ( natural, hormone free, grassfed beef, Emu, pork, whatever.) I think what he is trying to say is most of us were around when there was no such thing and people weren't as fat, they worked just as hard or harder, and they lived just as long. Everything you hear today from the media is negative, agriculture or otherwise. Just listen to Jim Lamley in the morning on KSDZ radio. Now I don't always disagree with some of those opinions, I am just saying that it would be nice to hear a positive note sometimes. We bash government, packers, producers, whoever it may be. Why don't we all try to find the good in every situation, then people will come together and make things work. That's the way it used to be in the Sandhills, your neighbors would help you through anything, no matter the cost to them. Now we are too busy looking over the fence criticizing everyone else. Readers don't kid yourself, just because Soapweed eats store boughten goods doesn't make him a silver spooner. He stays home minds his business, works deligently and enjoys his lifestyle and probably has as much appreciation for the simple things as anyone else. As far as working hard, he not only has built something up but is passing on a legacy, how many of you have sold out or are think about it when you could help someone get started. Here is a man WHO is passing on a legacy and doing it quite well.

Soapweed, the consumers that don't trust our food supply don't hold it against producers...they don't trust the large food corporations and with good reason. All the food recalls shows there are problems in our fresh food delivery system even if it is only a small percentage of the total food. I talked to an inspector that worked at a large, high volume processing plant...he said there were two main problems. The chain speed was too fast for the inspectors to do an adequate job of inspection and the workers simply didn't care about the job they were doing. Too often, faster, more efficient, cheaper comes at the cost of safety and quality...consumers are smart enough to understand that.

You are wrong about this. I suggest reading the Weston A Price site Northern linked to. Then buy Gary Taubes "Good Calories, Bad Calories" and read it this winter. This is not a diet book...it's a book on the science AND politics of diet, past and present. He documents the history of dietary science and explains what has worked and what hasn't and WHY. And I am sure that you are entirely sincere. Just as I am sure that Soapweed is a good and admirable man of principle.

The problem begins when those whom we should trust and partner with, as you suggest, turn out to be out for only one thing - their own benefit. Until you have been there you have no idea what it is like.

At that point, one begins to learn how to make it a different way and show the entrepreneurial spirit that originally made free enterprise a formidable force in the new world.

THAT seems to be the part that you are not getting.

Good for you, Denny, good for you. But your lesson obviously still awaits you. Control is merely an illusion. You'd be better off to start learning that sooner rather than later.

I still maintain that too much food is the problem, not what kind of food it is. With a little restraint, it is amazing how well any diet will work. Also, the fact that people just don't do the hard physical work that was done in the past has a major impact on today's obesity problem.

I knew I couldn't convince you, that's why I asked you to read the book. Note the title...different kinds of food react different in our bodies. Almost all exercise programs for weight lose fail over the long term. You are right in that calories in must roughly equal calories burned, but the kind of calories does make a difference.
If you don't want to buy the book, I'll mail you my copy.

Don't undersell it. The book is a fascinating read.

If calories in, calories out is the total equation then we should be able to feed our cows a straight straw diet and they will gain weight. Calories are a measure of heat energy, not nutrition. To evaluate the amount of calories the product is burned until all that is left is charcoal and the heat that it created determines the number of calories. The digestion system of animals including humans do not "ignite" the food that we eat, so there has to be other factors involved. Below is how calories are actually determined.

"In the modern day world, Calories are generally measured by using a sealed device called a calorimeter which locks in the heat and measures it based on the chemical reaction of the ignited food. A small vacuum of water rests above the food chamber. Once the food has been ignited and burns out, the temperature of the water is measured which thus determines the calorie content of the food.

Basically, a Calorie is the amount of energy (heat) required to increase the temperature in water 1 gram. " from
http://www.dietbites.com/Weight-Loss-Tips/109.html

This is from PER's wife, who has done endless research on this matter. The above science just not hold true, the calories in equals calories out theory. How do we, animals and humans create this reaction that they use to determine the number of calories a food has in our digestive system that has an average temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit?

Just food for thought.

Denny I admire your work ethics.

But to post substance on how to raise a family and make a profit is not a rant.

I am quite sure if you are the jack of all trades you lay claim to that you are guilty of the following. I dare say you have educated people why it is better to be in command your own future rather than taking commands. As well I am quite sure if you offer to build a trailer you have told people why your work is just as good or better than a factory trailer. when you did things like this would you considerer them rants or constructive open minded examples?

If you pour concrete do you not use examples of why your work is better or worth more than the work of others? I guess its best said and summed up this way. It's a pretty sorry frog that wont croak for it's own pond. To do the croaking their must be input examples and dialog.

No one has been disrespectful to Soap rather its constructive dialog plain and simple.

Soap you are 100 percent correct that lazy people are obese. None of my Grandparents were over weight lived to be in their 80's cooked with lard, ate red eye gravy, Biscuits deserts every meal and so on.

I wonder if anyone knows that America as of 2003 never conducted a study about the effects of Microwaves on the nutrients in food once microwaved.

The soviet union conducted many studies and concluded that microwaved food suffered a major loss in food values. Yet the Littons on of the biggest Charolais breeders in the 60's got rich off this technology all the while no studies on the effects of cooking with microwaves. Now there is a just example of corporate America.

Then lets not forget the cell phone companies and their run to be the biggest and best. In 2001 they denied flat out any harm could come from cell phones now they are posting warning signs. might I ALSO SAY THESE ARE NOT GOVERNMENT mandated like cigarette warnings.

Oh then mentioning cigarette's lets not forget they were guilty as the day was long of manipulating the chemicals so as to addict smokers. The same types of manipulation have taken place in the food industry.

Look at the effects of nitrates no value except color. A known carcinogen but it must look good at the expense of the consumers health.

:!: :!:

I almost forgot when was the last time you were served a meal like the pictures show in the ads? Talk about being duped by advertising. they spend days to make the pictures and ads and 15 seconds to throw the meal together.

then Walmart, Lowe's and Home Depot all put mom and pop out of business with Guarantees that could not be matched. Checkout the guarantees now.

People can read all of the books they want, they can not deny the fact that obesity and a lot of other health problems are directly related to exercise. 30 years ago technology in rural Nebraska was Public Television and an ATARI. We grew up learning to use our imaginations and inventing games to play outside or working. Once we were of age we worked everyday, there were cows to milk, calves to feed or fence to be fixed (even after school and on weekends). Today there is Satelite TV and XBOX or Wii, the internet and cell phones. Kids today have no responsibilities, they don't have chores to do everyday or summer jobs. They set in front of the TV or computer and watch, play games or chat and TEXT. Parents, being my generation, are no better. We do not set boundaries or demand responsibility and lead by example like our grandparents did. We are a society that has created our own problems. Not GOD creating bad genes. I have a friend at 73 yrs old was working as a missionary. He lost 30 lbs in about 3 weeks and ate like a horse. He worked his a$$ of literally, would've probably killed most people his age. When he left he weighed less than when he graduated from Highschool and he felt great. Nothing like a little hard work and exercise. That's leading by example.
Burnt, thanks for the History Lesson. I have been there. I get really sick of someone trying to screw the wheels off of me, I know the difference. I also am tired of watching people trying to screw everyone else just so they can get ahead. Have you guys ever read The 7 Habits. What about win, win. I help you, in return you help me and it works out for everyone. It infuriates me to think that people such as yourself do not have enough forsight to see that without your neighbor and your community you will cease to exist. Sometime you will need someone and becuase of people like me there will be someone there, even if you don't give a damn about my operation or future.
Denny, right on. You said it. You all have missed Denny's point. He is merely saying "when the going gets tough, the tough get going". They don't look for someone else to blame for their misfortune, they are accountable. Instead of wallowing in self pitty they push back.
