    More December pictures 2015

Very nice, very American. I oftentimes think that the decline of families involved in ranching and farming, and the values they learn and portray, is what is changing America for the worse.

    McDonald's wants "sustainable beef"

Remember that McDonalds and others are merely catering to consumer/political image, demand and sentiment. The industry will continue to move in that direction and it will not be as painful as it may seem.

Nature Conservancy buys land on Milk River Mt.

How is it a land grab when the rancher/owner along with their ranch legal council makes a conscientious decision to enter into the agreement? Nobody is grabbing or taking..... such as Montana access groups attempt to do.

Nature Conservancy buys land on Milk River Mt.

Nature conservancy can be an option. The Cornwell family of course has every right to shape the future of what they own.

    Post High School Education

Michigan State University has an excellent 2 year beef management program. I would encourage some type of higher education, sounds like he already has the hands on experience.

What are the best ways to get involved in ranching?

There are generally ranches looking for help, just be honest about your experience. There are several other good suggestions here, other than going to the bar. Can take on 4H , attend cattle auctions to meet people, go to the Nile in Billings, take classes at community college, jobs at genetic...

    College???

Get your college education, competing in the next 30 years will be much different than the past 30. You can never learn too much, or become over educated.

    New to forum

There is not a lot of snow in the area. Occasional dumps but they tend to melt rather quickly when compared to higher elevations. Investors are in much of Montana but tend to be more in the scenic areas ( mountains, streams, lakes etc) and in lands containing good elk hunting and fertile grain...

    New to forum

Stocking rates around Winnett vary as to amount of bottom lands, creeks, and farming practices. In general, but highly variable, most I know run about one pair per 30 acres. Lower towards the Missouri breaks and rugged country, a little more towards the Snowies where precipitation is higher...

    New to forum

The area around Winnett is variable. Most is rolling sage country with about 13 inches of annual precipitation. Petroleum county is mainly made up of cattle ranches with 300 head cow calf herds and up. Generally not much available grazing ground to lease.

    Gifted a Ranch

I would begin with a discussion with the accountant or finance person that has historically been handling the ranch, that will give you an idea into the profit potential. Second, I would keep the hired hand at least until you can learn more about the situation. You will have to determine if...
