    May/June Calving Update

These cattle don't get mineral while they are on the forest in the summer. I feel in our case, mineral does help when it's feasible to feed it. Our vet has reported high preg rates for this entire area this fall. Indeed, a great year for many...finally!

    May/June Calving Update

Ditto. These cows bred up very well also.

    Who?

I have to respectfully disagree with you FH regarding killed vaccines. Our neighbor, who buys calves to run over on grass, purchased four loads of steers off of the video, about five bucks back from the market (clue number 1). The cattle had only ever been on a killed program...cows/calves...

    Who?

I have used MLV in pregnant cows during the fall according to label...meaning they had had a previous dose within a year. I liked not having to vaccinate prior to breeding, but felt it may have contributed to more abortions. It seemed like about six weeks post vaccination in the fall, 2-3 cows...

    question for angus folks

I agree with the others, I wouldn't risk it. I got in a pinch and used a different bull on these heifers last spring, and paid for it this year. He had decent numbers, Image Maker bred, and these females don't have big birthweights, but I still ended up assisting around 20%. I completely...

Food for thought for winter calving

...or co-mingle with another herd on a forest permit during the summer. I don't have a night calver, or day help, but I do have nice facilities and not a huge herd to calve thankfully. Also, the worst seems to only last 3-4 weeks. I believe on this ranch you calve early before the big snows...

    High elevation pap tested bulls

I think Herring Angus, Encampment, WY sells both private treaty bulls, and has an auction in late April. They develop them at home, and aren't ever taken below elevation. We've had good luck with their bulls in the past. You might give them a call to see what they have. In regard to Parker...

    Forage Raised Red Angus Bulls

I see some useful bulls in the group. I would think their condition would especially work for those who calve and turn bulls out later. At that point they would really look shiny after 30-60+ days on green grass with the benefit of never being pushed hard on feed. Good luck with your bulls :D .

    Calf prices

Well our annual Hereford/Angus debate generally falls closely behind our calving season discussion, if I remember correctly .

    Calf prices

Agreed, I have learned a lot over the years too. I still miss NR's input, it is hard to believe he has been gone almost two years.

    Calf prices

...and heaven help anyone out there calving Hereford cows in February from posting on this site because we all know, managing behind our keyboards, there is no way that could ever be profitable (just a little sarcasm).  I just find it hard to be very judgmental of anybody's...

    calves on cows all winter

 That sounds like he qualified for manager of the year .

Why did you choose your breed?

I bet those are outstanding calves, please post some pics when you get the chance :D .

    Simmental and disposition

I take that back, the paddles work good moving newborns. I just don't like any noise when working bigger cattle.

    Simmental and disposition

Yep, I can't stand those either.

Balancers- To Cross or Not to Cross?

Soooo people, what do you think would happen if I bought a few higher percentage Gelbviehs and put them in after 10 days of exposing the cows to more maternal type Balancers and Angus bulls (to get heifers from)? Would I lose too much uniformity in the steers? Any other suggestions what to...

Balancers- To Cross or Not to Cross?

The load of steers weighed 587 on October 2nd. They certainly won't win a weaning weight contest, but I feel come from moderate mothers who seem to be efficient eaters...kinda important for a place that has to feed 150+ days a year. Our open cows, in great shape, averaged right at 1225 pounds...

Balancers- To Cross or Not to Cross?

Oh sure, something more to worry about! Anything is possible, but the majority of our Angus genetics we have used has come from a breeder who has used their own genetics for several generations, with very limited outside breeding. They don't have the wow factor numbers, but crank out very...

Balancers- To Cross or Not to Cross?

Good point FH. I am very careful about selecting for calving ease, especially since I have to do all of the calving solo. On the balancer side, I have chosen for short gestation length, and it has worked for me. Sometimes odd balls show up, but for the most part, these calves come out around 75...
